  • Does Vray support 8GB of RAM????

Will Vray take advantage of a 8gb Ram configuration?

Ive read somewhere that if you have 4gb, it will "crash" at 3.2, and if you have 5gb, it will crash at 3.6 or something

"* use a 64 bit OS and Rhino should allow to use approx. 3.6GB RAM instead 1.6GB only. If 4GB are installed, Rhino could crash at 3.2GB, if 5GB are installed Rhino should use until 3.6GB (tested with XP64)."
(from micha´s tips on saving RAM)

Im having problems with big architectural scenes, and as im planning on getting a new computer, i wanted to check whether to spend more money on ram, or save it for something else.

    Future Setup:
    AM3 X2 550be
    M2N78 pro
4gb Gskill 1066mhz (if it is worthwhile, there will be 8gb)

    Thanks

V-Ray uses as many processing cores and as much RAM as it can get it's hands on. Any limitations in place should be caused by having a 32-bit operating system, or the host application's limitations.

      Thank you!

Im running on a XP64, so i think there will be no problems there.

actually the answer is no. Vray cannot use all 8gb of RAM even if you do have 64bit. Since Vray runs within rhino (which is 32bit) it can use a max of 4gb BUUUUUUT you could run 2 instances of rhino to max out all 8gb if that makes sense. That means rendering 2 images at once.

          Hi,

          @ John H

Could u plz explain this 2 instances theory?

          thx

You can find all answers here:

            http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?topic=5887.0

At the moment you can use max 3.6GB. If VfR 64bit would be ready for v5 64bit, than you could use all RAM you can build in.

THX MIcha, but i readed your post before.
Is it possible to split a rendering in rhino like john H ist explaining.
              2 x 3.2 for one rendering. Because i have 16 gb ram.

My scene is 250MB big and at 3.2 gb it crashed every time i try to render.

No, I think he means you can render with one Rhino task and use the other to modeling.

If you can't render the whole scene, than you could try to render parts of it only and later combine the image parts.

Did you try my render tools that export the render mesh to a new file and the other tool that load an empty scene? Also don't forget to hide or temporary delete unvisible geometry.

Re: Does Vray support 8GB of RAM????

Here is what i mean. Instead of batch rendering you could open 2, 3, 4 or however many instance of rhino you want and render all at once. Its kinda like batch rendering but not really. You actually are running several instances of rhino at once. Its great if you dont feel like setting up a batch render or deal with the chances of it not working right. it doesn't really render any quicker, you can just render more.

Good idea - it's only a pity that DR can't be used in "multi-task-mode".

Actually, that 32bit limitation was what i was afraid of... But allthesame... Gotta make the most of my 4gbs then.

Wondering... You could open 2, 3 or 4 instances of Rhino to render at the same time. But will the CPU handle that smoothly?????? I mean, it will have to render 4 images at once, so the time per render will be high, i suppose.....

Would have to make some tests, batchrendering 4 images, and direct rendering in 4 instances of rhino those same 4 images, and compare times.

                        Thanks for the imput!

yes, true. It only works if you need 2,3 or 4 images It runs just as smooth to render 4 images as it does to render 1. It will take about the same amount of time to render all for together as it does to render 4 separately.

I don't know if it's the same for VfR but with VfSU i need to clear the ASGvis temp folder before i render any additional render instances of the same model. Because if i don't the images of textures in the temp folder interferes with the same named images that has to placed in that folder to render the same model/file. Hope this make scenes.
