  • White Material Rendering Problem

This is a very basic cabinet model that I've used a white diffuse on in the first rendering and a white car paint with the reflection backed off to .75 on the second. I can't seem to figure out why I'm getting all of the black distortion (for lack of better terms) in the details and along many of the sharp edges of the model. This seems to happen in virtually every rendering I make in the white materials no matter what size the model is. Any help or ideas here would be greatly appreciated.

You're using low settings. Are you using IR and LC ?

Yes I'm using IR as primary and LC as secondary. Here are my settings. What is causing this?

For the blotchiness to disappear try this:
        Image sampler> Adaptive amount @0.85,
        LC Subdivs 800,
IR Min rate -4, Max -2

Those settings definitely helped while only slightly increasing my rendering time, but didn't completely eliminate the problem as you can see. The minimal amount of distortion left could easily be rectified in post, but the adverse reaction that has occurred is the "jaggy" pixelation in the more perspectively angled lines of the model. Thoughts?

Can you show us your Image sampler and your DMC sampler setting?

                Re: White Material Rendering Problem

Actually, I just realized immediately after posting those settings that I had already reverted them to my original settings to get rid of the jagging problem. so by adjusting the settings to what 40th suggested I managed to significantly reduce the white distortion problem, but increased the jaggy pixelation. With my original settings I get great smooth imaging, but the white distortion. I want to reiterate that this problem of distortion only seems to happen with white materials. Here is a wood grain in dark cherry finish, as you can see, no distortion and created with the settings I just posted. This is starting to feel like a double edged sword.

Kind of strange, but it looks like you have some displacement in your white material.

Strange, definitely. Especially since the very first white material used in the first rendering at the top is the default Diffuse White in Vray. There has got to be something making it do this.

I've had a problem rendering white too.

I did a work around in Photoshop because I was on a timeline, but I'd love to see if there's some easy tweak to the settings.

                        Hi
Enable the normal option on Images sampler rollout. This option will supersample the sharper area like the internal edges. Also decrease the threshold to .01, this options controls the antialiasing on the textures and noisy bump map. The main issue here is the antialiasisng. The main reason why the wood one look good is because is darker and V-Ray need more sampler to calculate the bright areas. Because the antialisisng sampling is to low is that you get that jagged edge.
