  • On a related note ... the next V-Ray?

Does anyone know the status of the next V-Ray for Rhino? The ASG developer blog hasn't mentioned it in about a year; all they appear to be working on is V-Ray for Sketch-Up.

I hope there is a new version of V-Ray in the works and that its 64-bit and works with Rhino 5. Anyone have news?

Haha I made your response into a separate post. Admin FTW.
I will answer your question now though so I am not such a bad guy.

We are currently focusing on V-Ray for SketchUp and have done no real work on the rhino side, The good news is that almost all of the work for the SketchUp end of things will be portable over to Rhino when we are done. This means that all this time we spent completely re-writing the program from the ground up will just happily port over to Rhino and cut our development time in half (knock on wood).

Hang in there it wont be long now. Smile big and dream of IES lighting.

As far as 64bit support goes, the honest answer is I have no idea when that shoe will drop. It may be the next release it may be the release after next, it really just depends on how everything comes together when the time comes to brush the dirt off our hands and begin anew.

Developing Vray for SU first sounds for me like Rhino user will get, what is developed. Will Rhino user get a chance to influence the development? I remember me on the VfR 1 beta time and it was good time. Or will be the SU plugin the limit for the development of VfR? So, if something is not possible for SU, than it will not be extra developed for Rhino? It's good for the developer to cut down the developing time for two plugins, but I afraid it could cause, that not anything what is possible at Rhino will be implemented. If this isn't the case, when will be the time for Rhino related features?

With a one year (+/-) estimated delivery date, that puts V-Ray v 2.0 right after Rhino 5.0; which is their first fully 64-bit version. As such, I can't imagine V-Ray would still be 32-bit at that point in time. Heck, my copies of Photoshop, Studio MAX, etc are all shipping 64-bit, and have been for close to a year.

@Micha, we are always improving. The entire point of this update to V-Ray for SketchUp started as a complete reworking of the same program. Which is to say we wanted this coming release to be exactly the same from a feature standpoint and to just do better at what it already did, with a side hope of making the addition of future features easier. That being said we ended up adding a ton of new features once they became easy to add. We have not started planing out what will happen with V-Ray for Rhino out loud yet so there are no definite answers to give as to what features will be included. Sorry if this sounds like a non answer but we really don't know.

@Schultzeworks same thing as before, I could not tell you one way or the other. I am not capable of saying yes no or even maybe on this issue without lying.

Well of course! How could we cut out our user base from helping us make this product better than ever? I can't wait to see what this product will be like, after going through a development cycle on a more robust application like Rhino. It should be a lot of fun!

A big wish from a pro user: could it be possible that VfR 2 can be installed as independent renderer? I afraid, if VfR2 beta is out, that it could be a problem to use it for big projects. I would like to stick at VfR1 for big projects and use VfR2 for small projects and testing only.
