  • URGENT! Hi-Res Rendering does not work!!

    Folks,
I need to finish a print presentation pretty soon and the system keeps crashing. How can I tweak the settings to make it work?!

_Final resolution to be 16000x8000 (ideally 2.8x1.4m @150dpi)
_One DR Slave machine (both PCs with XP 32bit )
_Large Resolution Rendering Tips (here) used
    _Scene size 55MB, 449objects, 294638 polygons

    _________________

_What are the crucial settings to keep an eye on to avoid running out of memory (Error: Abnormal Program Termination)?
_Can I do the final rendering also at 4x higher resolution or will the quality suffer too much?
_Are there any render services on the net that support VfR?

    Help is much appreciated!!
    Cheers,
    Matt

Are you rendering out to a file? If you are then I guess that resolution is way over Vrays capabilities.

      Urgent= my least favorate word

Typically this happens when you are running out of memory (RAM) to process the scene. V-Ray for Rhino and SketchUp are 32 bit programs and like all 32bit programs have a memory limitation that can have adverse effects with larger or more complicated models. Here is more information on this limitation from Microsoft:
      http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system...AE/PAEmem.mspx

There are two strategies that can prove very effective when dealing with this issue. The first is through the use of distributed rendering. Here is a video that explains how to set up this wonderful feature:
      http://software.asgvis.com/index.php...=395&Itemid=53

Some scenes may require a little extra attention, we have found that using the steps in our large resolution tutorial:
      http://software.asgvis.com/index.php...=16&Itemid=437

Unfortunately not every scene can be rendered exactly as they are built and in some cases you may have to break a scene into smaller parts and render them separately to later combine them in a post processing application such as Photoshop.

        Don't oversee this thread:

I think, a 64bit OS could help here, but I'm not sure you will get 16000x8000. But 75dpi with 8000x4000 should be possible.

          Edonk,
I wouldn't go that far to say it's way over VfR's capabilities. Try rendering a simple box at that resolution: it won't crash.
But surely some settings can even make a simple scene too complex to process.

          Keith,
yea - those 32bit suck somehow... Unfortunately, I can't use any of the 400+ computers around here since our IT Dept. already calls me the Lunatic and they're not willing to put out new Images that feature the DRspawner ;D So, there's just one slave...
I thought about splitting up the scene, but it's a bit tricky due to all those reflexions.

          What I did:
_reduce polycount by lowering mesh settings where I could to an absolute minimum.
_set raycaster parameters to optimum values
          _rendered prepass @4800x2400
          _saved vrmap (835.5MB)

and let's see what comes out if I turn it up now...

          Matt

PS: Micha, yea - thanks for the reminder! I'll pop out some meshes before I restart...

Re: URGENT! Hi-Res Rendering does not work!!

Okay, I extracted all render meshes. File size dropped to 15MB
And, I did get DRspawner on a few machines but every node closes the connexion during receiving the scene.
            It says:

Error receiving DR scene (0), closing DR session
            [Close] Forced close connection.
[AcceptProc] Connection reset from _IP-address_ (10053)

Now, there's just the main machine left - but it still renders to disk @9600x4800.
It's a bit small, but maybe enough.

            Catch you guys later!

            UPDATE:
            It works!!! Har-har-har...
Just that stupid "send to each node" option needed to be replaced by a network folder and my little render farm runs like hell!

            UPDATE2:
Didn't need to render to disk - used 8 Slave PCs and the 75,000,000 pixels went thru in 3h37m. That's truly incredible!
Thanks again Micha for the hint to extract the render mesh. That's what it was all about!!

            Cheers,
            Matt

Awesome success story! I'm glad to hear you were able to rock out some images. We'd love to see them if they're ever available for public consumption.
              Best regards,
