  • Boosting computer performance

    Hi Guys,

I currently have a new Mac Pro, which i purchased early this year.

    The specs are:

-MS Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP2
    -Intel Xeon E5520 8-core
    -6GB RAM
-Nvidia GeForce GT 120 with 512MB
    -2TB HD

When i purchased this computer i decided to keep all of the specs (apart from the processor) standard, and then upgrade later if i need them. It renders great, especially compared to the imac i was using before this (i am only a student) , but when i am actually modeling it is quite slow. I understand this is a problem with the graphics card which is easily swapped.

If you guys could give me some suggestions (a couple from some different price ranges, remembering that they need to be mac compatible) with what i should be buying that will give me great value for money i would really appreciate it

As i mentioned before i am only a student so not only do i have a limited budget but it is hard to justify spending heaps of money at the moment. Saying that however i plan to use this computer for as long as possible so i am willing to spend a reasonable amount of money.

Thanks for your help, i really appreciate it

    Re: Boosting computer performance

You have to search for a Graphic card that it's only MAc/win compatible like the ones in the Apple Store.

    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/hom...I&s=topSellers

However if you are not going to use the mac partition, you can install any of the "PC" graphic cards in the market.

    I have a similar computer:

    -MS Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit
    -Intel Xeon E5550 Dual quad-core
    -8GB RAM
    -2 x Nvidia GeForce GT 120 with 512MB
    -640 GB HD

wow thanks for the quick reply

yeah ive been looking around but theres not all that much to chose from when it comes to macs, but the two ive seen so far that look pretty good and a good price are:

      http://store.apple.com/au/product/MC...co=MTg2OTU0NTI
      http://store.apple.com/au/product/MC...co=MTg2OTU0NzM

i cant see a difference with the two though, the descriptions are actually the same it just says "amazing" instead of "impressive" on one

However if you are not going to use the mac partition, you can install any of the "PC" graphic cards in the market.
really? that would be really good for me if it is true because i hardly ever use the mac partition, even though i much prefer mac, just not enough software yet
i only need the extra power in windows as well because i dont do any work in mac now anyway, and the current card is plenty for what i doin the mac partition.

if i put a pc card in to use with windows will my computer screw up when i try to use mac or will it just use the GT 120? also is there anything else i would have to do to get it working? i am asssuming that i would just install it as normal when booted in the windows partition as the computer doesnt know any different.

i use the apple 24" cinema display as well which requires the mini display port, can u just use an adapter to connect them?

      thanks again for your help
