  • Help, material creation

Hey im trying to create a coat of arms as a material instead of modeling the whole file in rhino thought it would be easier to create the outline and but the material of the coat of arms as a bump map, but its not working as seen in the picture below.

Can some one help me out?

this is the coat of arms as it should look

    thanks

    Re: Help, material creation

    Hey there,
seems like the mapping doesn't match your outlines, right?
Well, did you create a mapping channel for it? Maybe you should correct the size of the mapping widget.

    But:
First thing to save some bytes would be to simply create a surface without any cutouts. You can control transparent areas of the surface by using a transparency map in the diffuse channel. Starting with your bumpmap file, simply make a bw-image with black areas you'd like to keep visible and white ones for the transparent parts.
So, you don't need to create complex geometry (e.g. trimming curved surfaces with nurbs curves increases file size and therefore render time) and the outlines will always fit pefectly to the bumpmap.

    Cheers,
    Matt

I agree with Matthias. Also I recommend you use displacement instead of bump. The bump map give you an illusion of some depth, but the displacement actually deform the geometry to get more depth and realism.

          Sure, Fernando
          Thanks for filling in!
Just as a side note: Displacement adds to the render time, as well. So it depends on how detailed the object is being rendered, whether to use bump or displacement.

As for the other things, Luke: would you mind going through the manual, the tutorials provided and the rest of the forum to obtain a basic understanding for VfR? There's lots of answers in these three sources of wisdom!

          Cheers,
          Matt
