  • About upgrading computer

Hey guys, sorry if this isn't exactly a VFR question... I've ran a quick search on forums, and found some info about it already... just want to confirm some stuff...

    At the moment I have:

    Intel core i7 2.57GHz

    4 GB DDR3 RAM 1333

    Windows 7 32-bit.

    ATI Radeon x1950 xtx 512GB.

my first steps would be getting another 4gigs of Ram so i have 8, and changing from windows 32bits to 64...

Also... my graphic card is a bit old, but I've been told its considered one of the best cards ATI done on that time...

Should I get a more recent ATI with 1GB?
Anything else I can do to improve it without being too much expensive?

    I appreciate any help,
    Thanks

Change to 64 bit before adding RAM, otherwise you won't be able to use that much RAM even if you install it. And until 64-bit Rhino is available, it won't use more than 4GB anyway (I think it's like 3.6 GB), so you may save $$ by only installing 6GB. Rhino 5 is 64 bit, but v-ray only works with the 32 bit version.

The graphics card is only going to affect moving around the model in Rhino, it won't affect rendering. Whether it makes sense to upgrade depends on the complexity of your models. So if the model isn't staggering badly as you orbit, then I would put upgrading the graphics card last on the list.

The developers has said they have VfR working with 64bit internally. But there is no timeline for when the next version will be out.
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

We already have an internal build at 64bit. We are refining it, but We don't when we are going to release one build for testing.

well.. thanks for the info... I guess I'll be ok for some time with that core i7 and 6-8 gb of ram... For rhino, I don't guess that my graphic card being old is a problem... It seems to start being a problem for recent games tho...

              Re: About upgrading computer

i'm pretty sure graphics cards are optimized differently for gaming or modeling - they're usually not excellent at both, so it's not surprising you're seeing issues with gaming if the modeling is ok.
