  • Material changes name on import

I've downloaded two nice looking carbon fiber materials from the site. When unzipping, I discovered one of them had a name like C.F.vismat. I usually try to avoid dots (period or full stop) in file names (apart from the file type separator), so I renamed the file, but when I import it in the VfR material rollout, it automatically changes it's name to C.F.Finalx. I find it a bit strange - could anyone explain to me why this happens?

(Also - the other one 'carbon fiber 2' makes my Rhino crash. I import the material and update the map paths, because I have all maps in a specific location, but when I try to render - or even update the preview of the map file (fresnel colour bitmap) I get a runtime error.)

This last problem is now solved. It was caused by jpeg bitmaps saved in 'optimized' and 'progressive' mode

the name of the material isn't based upon the file name. You can rename a .visopt to whatever you want, but when you load it, it will have whatever name it had when the material was saved out.

Thanks - interesting. The way to deal with it seems to be to rename the material in the rollout and then re-export it if you want to rename it.
