Does applying a zdepth channel to a render make saving with VRImage useless? Will the image file contain the zdepth channel in it and remain after converting to EXR?

I have done several high res images that crash the memory, so using VRimage will help me out. However, I would really like to have the zdepth for post processing.

I just tried that yesterday and no... if you use vrimage, you do not get the channels...

Unfortunately we can't save the additional channels when you use VRImage.

why? I know it is available, but they don't get extracted.

        when you type vrimg2exr test.vrimg test.exr -info

you get the list of channels in the file,so they are there how come it is impossible to extract?

so you're saying that there isn't a problem, and the tool does extract the channels?

Saying it should do something, isn't the same as saying that it does do something. I don't know why they made the tool unable to extract channels, or why they only extract to the exr format. What if you want a png? ::shrugs::

                    Re: VRImage and Zdepth

There's an issue with the current vrimage format (from 1.49.01) - the vrimg file does not open/convert correctly (that's where the channel information would be) There was a thread in the beta forum a while back.

*edit: whoops, just noticed this is in the Rhino section. My comment is relevant to the current VfSU version. I dunno about rhino, but if the vrimg output is the same format, the converter should work to extract the channel info. I used to be able to with the older versions.

I would be curious to see if a vrimg generated in vray for max would open and save all the channels,in vrimg2exr

Anyway it would be very very useful if it did.Another thing to wait for.

Yes, this is possible on V-Ray for Max, it is an additional option called "Save separate render channel" we don't have this option on V-Ray for SU yet. I hope we can add this option in a near future.
