  • Do you use Rhino block

    Hello,

I still don't feel comfortable to render rhino blocks. At my work for instance I got lots of blocks to render but the problem is that I can't control the texture mapping for blocks. This is why I still explode all blocks and go for vray proxy if instances are too much.

Wondering if you guys have a successful workflow for rendering blocks you might want to share?

    thanks!

1.5 ... don't use proxies at blocks, because a bug that will be fixed in the next update

1.05 ... I use blocks all days. My blocks are separate files at the HDD linked to the scene. If I need, that I edit the block file and use the blockmanager to update it at the scene. Trick: mapping isn't sticky to the block objects, so I you need to work with meshes, apply mapping and export/import as obj. So the mapping UV are burned in the mesh. One mapping channel can be used at this way only.

      Thank you micha,

I only use 1.5 vray. Really wish block can be properly rendered at 1.5 without export/import obj (but this is rather rhino issue- how to deal with the mapping), as you end up accumulating bunch of files...

Hi Micha. Dragging up this old thread because it was the only place I could find blocks and proxies mentioned together. Using Rhino5 SR8 with Vray 2.00.02 and using a proxy as a block results in an immediate Rhino crash when rendering with Vray.

Do you know if this is still a bug? It's strange because in the Vray help it even suggests to use this method: "If you need to create several proxies linked to the same .vrmesh file, it's better to make them blocks - this will save memory since the .vrmesh file will be loaded only once."

          Hi gregb
Can you send me the scene that is crashing your Rhino? Please include the proxy, etc.

            Thanks for the reply, Fernando.

Every time I've attempted to use any block, linked or not, of a proxy it causes an immediate Rhino crash on starting a Vray render.

I can send a simple test file of a cube that is proxied and then blocked, but I can't attach files, aside from images here or via PM. Files sent to vrayrhino@chaosgroup.com

            System:
            Rhino 5 SR8 x64
            Vray 2.00.02
            Windows 7

Oh, sorry for my lack of memory.
That was a known issue that we fixed. The fixed will be available in the Service Release 1 that we are working on. The release will be very soon.
