At VfR 1.5 try to disable "affect specular" at the sun light options. Did it help?

At 1.05 use a dir light instead a sun light. The sun light caused a bright reflection, difficult to sample some times.

Set the highlight glossiness at 1, so that the highlight is not blurred and invisible. Sideeffect: other lights (spot/point) don't create a highlight too.

You can also try turning on clamp output and subpixel mapping in the color mapping flyout. It helps with over-bright lights like the sun.
