  • VfR new materials

It is great that new VfR is out but now I see some problems with new materials system. Materials in old scenes not always render properly - for example old chrome renders with black reflections. There is a new VRayBRDF thing.
Are there any plans of some tutorials about new features and changes? I feel a little bit lost in the new material system.

Another specific question: where should I now put specular maps for my materials? In the 1.5 version fresnel reflectin were controled in the reflection texture slot. Now fresnel was moved outside and there is now place for textures. Old material doesn't work with the specular map and puting fresnel to reflect slot gives not desired result...

Hi Kubbek, I am also having issues with my scenes created in V Ray 1.5, once I loaded the new V Ray 2. My sunlight no longer shows up in my renders, nor do my bump maps, although they are shown in my material ui preview? Perhaps someone in the know can inform us on how to correct this.

Hey, I have solved one issue, by going to the V Ray drop down at the top of the Rhino UI, I found Rhino materials, and I enabled all V Ray materials. This reinstated my bump maps and my silver is silver again. Now there is just my sunlight issue.

Sun is solved, I had to delete the previous sunlight setting and create a new one, which now is visible in my renders. All working, great to have an upgrade on V Ray for Rhino, thanks.

Thanks robshaz - "Enable all Materials" fixed issues I was experiencing with emissive materials using bitmaps!

              Hi
What happen with the old build is that we had a bug where the plugin option in the material were not enable in the code and we didn't care about that, because we use to render all the materials as V-Ray material. With this new Version we added support for Rhino materials. Therefore some old materials have the plugin option disable in their properties. The option in the V-Ray menu that you guys used (enable all V-Ray materials) , will automatically enable the plugin option for the V-Ray material.

Hi Jmondro, no problem, I will remember this for when I check some of my other scenes, it seem like "enable all materials" is like a reset for the upgrade from vfr 1.5 to 2 to get everything back to normal.

The new V-Ray material is pretty close how we make materials in 3ds max. The beauty of this material is that you do not have to waist time adding layers. If you want to add a specular mapping, you can place the texture in the reflection mapping.
You can lean a little bit more about this material here: http://help.chaosgroup.com/vray/help...aymaterial.htm

Hi, I found the help page after I posted here and found some useful information there. I experimented with specular maps and indeed it works with reflection map.
Do I understand it correctly that the "enable all materials" resolves the old problem of materials that switch from plug-in mode to rhino material? That would be great!

Yes, "enable all materials" resolve the plugin issue.

                          Hi folks,

I don't still don't seem to get the new materials right...

                          How/Where do I add a bump/displacement map to a newly generated V-Ray Material?

Hi Helldoor, when you right click on the "scene materials" select "create material" and choose "standard" from the dropdown. You will find the bump map options.

Thanks robshaz. But, what I'm trying to do, is add a bump map to the new Vray 2.0 V-Ray Material and not to the 'old' standard one.

Since adding the special V-Ray Materials to the 2.0 version, Chaos Group highly recommends using them, as they are optimized to work with Vray and guarantee faster and more precise renderings.
But in the 'Maps' section, these just have the 'Opacity' and 'Environment Override' options, but no place for Bump or Displacement maps...
