  • Rugs & Carpets

    Hi folks,

I recently had to render a carpet for an interior. I had luck, that the carpet was not in the foreground, cos'... well, it didn't really turn out very nice.
After some research, I figured out, that the most of the nice looking carpets in interior renderings are made in Max, via Fur or Hair plugins.

But how do we achieve a nice carpet also in Rhino + Vray?

I used RhinoHair with some success in the past.

      Thanks for the answer, mgibeault.

I have some questions about your experience with RhinoHair:

. How does it 'behave' with vray and the render times - does it take longer, than using displacement?
. Could you possibly share a image of a carpet you've done, using RhinoHair?

      Thanks in advance.

It's pretty straightforward to use and set up.
Depending on the displacement settings used, I think RhinoHair is faster.

          Thanks, it looks nice.

I'll give it a try and post results.

            Hi again.

Had some time to test the Rhino Hair Plugin for making a Carpet. My fazit:

            Pros ________________________

+ Nice, straightforward and quick settings
+ Authentical looks, due to 'real' forms (not displacement)
+ A bit shorter render times

            Cons ________________________

            - Huge model size (my carpet - 1.80 x 2.80 m with 120000 nodes is 290MB - bigger than my whole interior model!). Any ideas how to optimize that, besides using proxy?
            - Long-faser carpets tend to 'swallow' more light and darken their surroundings a bit...

Here are the comparison pics - left - old, displacement, right - new, rhino hair:

I think the two carpets are credible. Different carpets but realistic.
