  • Using 3DMax+VRay models/materials with Rhino+VRay

    Hello Everyone!
As I look around the internet looking for nice accessories to go with my room scenes ( Flowers, vases, electronics, books, etc), I find that a lot of the very high quality models are 3DMax versions. A great example of quality is the gadgets collection from Viz People. I there any way to use these 3DMax files with Rhino? Please let me know if any of you have done this before.

Also, do any of you know any great websites that have accessories for Rhino+VRay? I have used Flying Architecture, but I am looking for more options than what they have.

    Thanks,
    Rey

Rhino can't import *.max files directly, so you would have to convert them to something it can import, like *.3ds or *.obj
Some online marketplaces, like turbosquid, will offer this service if you don't have access to the software

v-ray materials files that were created in Max (*.mat) are not compatible with VfR or VfSu

I keep a list of resources here:

Let me know if you find any good ones that aren't on the list, or if any of these are dead or useless.

What Emil said about the models is true. But just to clarify something I have to mention that in V-Ray 3.0 you can use .vrmat which is the new default material format in V-Ray for Rhino and V-Ray 2.0 for Sketchup. Also it have a material converter that allows you to convert .mat into .vrmat. So, with V-Ray 3.0 you can use V-Ray for Rhino materials (vrmat) and inside 3ds max you will be able to convert .mat to .vrmat and use those material in Rhino.

Thanks, Fernando. That's great to hear and better than nothing. But needing access to almost $5k in other software makes it kind of impractical for most, I would guess.

What would be really useful is a standalone converter, even if it wasn't free.

(as long as it isn't $4500 US)

what's the story on this, does your license with autodesk prevent Chaosgroup from creating a standalone converter?
