  • how to stop chrome reflecting other objects in the scene

    Hi all,
I want to stop the chrome material reflecting other objects in the scene and only reflect a reflection map to make it look like chrome...is this possible and how?

I guess you could start with the standard chrome material and put a map in the reflection slot...

...and additional activate the material option "exclude ...". I don't know the right name, because I have no VfR at my current machine here.

          Hi SCB
You can use a combination of both suggestions. You can enable the option called "ignore objects in secondaries". This option will ignore all the object in the reflection. It will also ignore the dome light HDRI image if you are using a dome light. So you will have to add the desired HDRI on the "Reflection" slot for that material.

Thank you guys I will try it today.......if "ignore objects in secondary" is checked will it also ignore the 'options' environment refl map as well as the dome light??

Tee hee hee.......thanks for the help, all ok. I am not sure if I would have ever realised that "ignore objects in secondary" related to not reflecting other objects or environments! I am not sure what "optimize exclusions" does, its not affecting the render.

How do you learn things like this.....the less obvious solutions to specific rendering problems? And I do not think stopping reflections is a an unusual or difficult problem to encounter, but finding the solution was not intuitive. I am not a newbie to rendering, I have been using Alias Studio Tools to build and render for more years than I care to remember, but other than trawling through endless you tube videos there does not seem to be much in depth training material available for vray. Is it only available on training courses???? Maybe I am missing something....but when you are learning to use new software in a professional environment you do not have the time to spend watching videos, you have deadlines. I dare say there is a wealth of knowledge right here in this forum it just take time to find the answer you need.

Thanks for your help again much appreciated. steve

If you have some render experience than you could look through all the options and read the help at spot3d.com. The material options are quite important.

Thanks Micha, I had looked briefly through this before and there is a wealth of info there....however, if I had referred to this re the issue below I would have never found the solution, see the entry for "ignore objects in secondary". I guess the best tutorial is having a problem and finding the solution. Thanks again, steve

                  "ignore objects in secondary

On - if this is on the material will not be overridden when you enable the override color option in the Global Switches.

Optimized Exclusion - if this is on the material will not be overridden when you enable the override color option in the Global Switches."

Those descriptions are wrong. Are they like that in our help file?

Yes they are, see link below, towards the bottom of the scroll down tab. I used the help button in rhino's Vray tab to navigate to the page below, then "vray material" under "Materials".

                      http://help.chaosgroup.com/vray/help...ial_params.htm

                      "Ignore objects in secondary

On - if this is on the material will not be overridden when you enable the override color option in the Global Switches.

Optimized Exclusion - if this is on the material will not be overridden when you enable the override color option in the Global Switches."
