  • Materials go missing when I close Rhino

Hi, I don't think I have posted here before. I am a intermediate Vray user, and am having an issue with my materials when I close my Rhino file. The material still exists in my file, but all the material maps are missing, so I need to reassign them every time I open the file. Is there a setting I am missing, or is this a known bug in the new Vray 2 for Rhino?
Would greatly appreciate some input, Thanks, Rob.

Another issue I find is my UI freezes from time to time with the only solution being to close my Rhino file, and re-open it. I must add that the material loss is only once I have turned my pc off, and then re access my file. Look forward to some insight to my issues, thanks.

Thank you, Gerard, I did read this post before making my entry. Although I am also getting freezes of the ui, my primary issue is I am losing all my maps from my materials every time I turn my pc off. On large scenes you can imagine it is a real pain to get every map back into play. The article you refer to does not mention my primary issue, and I do not want to mess with code until I am sure it will resolve my issue.
Thanks for the input, appreciate it.

Hi. I haven't ha this as severe as you have, but I often find that when opening a file certain materials render out in default white instead of their assigned material.
To fix I either just go into the material viewer, click on the update preview. Once the preview renders out ok, then the material works.
If the preview doesn't render right then I do sometimes have to click on the blue M's to link to to the maps(diffuse or transparency). In this case the file link is there already I just go in and out and then it seems to realise that the map is there again. Hope that helps. Michael VS

Hi Michael, thank you for the input. Unfortunately that does not work with my issue. My map is always gone, and when I click on the preview, I just get a grey material, with reflections ect in place, but my maps are all gone. I was hoping someone would have an answer for me on this forum, but it does not look hopeful. I will give it another day, and then I will contact the Chaos support. Thanks for trying to assist. if I do get a fix I will post it here, and perhaps it will solve your issue as well.

Maybe something is "wrong" with your texture name or path. Did you use special characters like "ß" or "ü" or something special from your preferred language?

Hi Micha, no only regular characters with - and _ to separate words. This is how I have always done it, and no problems before the latest service pack for Vray 2 for Rhino.
Thank you for the feedback, look forward to some more ideas on what could be causing this.

I would like to add that I am finding this issue of maps going missing from my materials only appears to be with certain files. Perhaps it is corrupted. How would one find this out, and can it be corrected?

If you suspect that the file is corrupted, just open a new file and import the old file into it. You can also import saved views separately btw. Materials will come along with the import.

Where are your image files saved? If it's on a drive where the drive letter might change (eg USB drive) then you could have problems because vray remembers the explicit path rather than relative path if the files are above the rhino file in the directory tree. I see this a lot when people are working on USB drives in a networked enterprise environment, and the drive letter is constantly changing as people move between computers and plug in their drives. If this is the problem, it can be solved by making sure your images are in the same or lower directory as the rhino file.

Hi Emil, thank you for the feedback. I will try the import option and see if this solves my problem. I always place my material maps (jpg, etc.) in the same work folder my original Rhino file is situated in, and I do not work off a usb drive. In other words the path is unchanged from the moment of the map being assigned to date. Just to be clear, once I have opened the new file, I import the entire corrupt file, and not copy paste the objects form the corrupt file to the new file?
Thank you, appreciate the assistance, all the best Rob.

It shouldn't matter if you import or copy/paste. I guess if one doesn't work, try the other.

Hi Emil, thank you for the feedback. As soon as I have a moment to do the import of the affected file, I will let you know if it solved the issue. Currently dealing with deadlines.
