  • VRay Proxy between Max and Rhino

Hi, I have a question about the workflow to work bretween Rhino and Max, in our company we model everything in Rhino and render with Vray, and most of the times we have to export to Max or Maya for animations, I did some tests about vray proxies but can?t find a way to export also the materials and uv mapping seems not being there. Is this actually possible? aren?t the materials between applications compatible? also checked the vray scene export, but them I can?t change the materials in max if i have to. Which would be the most efficient workflow ?

    Thanks in advance.

Currently the only option to export materials from Rhino to 3dsMax/Maya is to export materials to .vrmat files and then load them with VRayVRmatMtl.
V-Ray Proxy files doesn't support materials, they only care the geometry along the UV-mapping so materials should be translated separately.

I just did a quick test on a very basic Rhino scene with very basic material and I can confirm that workflow work at least for not very complex setup.
Here is how the things looks like in Rhino:

And here is the same scene in 3dsMax, geometry is exported as a proxy and material as .vrmat file:

And the same thing in 3dsMax:

Here are all the files if you would like to have a look:

Note that the UVs are properly exported and loading into 3dsMax and Maya, this is something that it is expected to work.

      Hi VIRTEK,

In V-Ray 3.5/3.6 for Maya and 3dsMax .vrscene files can be imported and rendered without additional steps.
They'll carry over all the materials.
The workflow is similar to what you usually do with a proxy:
      1. Export a .vrscene from Rhino
      2. Create a vrscene loader in 3ds Max and set the path to the previously exported file
      3. The geometries rendered will have proper UVs and their corresponding materials. If there are external files (like textures) in the vrscene you should make sure their paths are valid.

      Regards,
      Konstantin
