  • png fadeout

Notice how the transparency on the case on the top of the right podium is sharp edged. The png that's driving the texture fades from opaque to transparent but V-Ray doesn't show that fading. Is there a way to make it do that?
Thanks for any advice you've got

    Hi arail,

It would be best if you could share the file with us so we can take a look at how the texture and material are setup. If this is alright, please send us an archived copy (V-Ray > Export > Pack Project) directly at support@chaosgroup.com or through a file-sharing service of your choice.

Simply check the [Use color texture as transparency] box in the Diffuse layer of your material.

Doesn't work with VRayBRDF. So when creating a generic material get rid of the BRDF layer first and then add a Diffuse layer

Just a heads-up, this workflow will be obsolete in the upcoming V-Ray 3.6 for Rhino build.
Improvements to opacity controls (already implemented in V-Ray 3.6 for SketchUp) are described in https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...ayBRDF-Opacity

        Kind regards,
        Peter

I can't find the option "only in secondary" at the help page. I use it at VfR2 very often. Will it be available for the next VfR release?

            Ah, even better
Thank you Peter for the info!

            Hi Micha,
            long time no see
What do you use the option for? Creating reflections?
Coming from the good old days of then-Discreet 3dsmax 5's scanline renderer, I was still employing this technique for quite some time in V-Ray, as well. However, I adopted a photographic approach and stick to realism, nowadays. I believe that's also what the developers have in mind when stripping not-so-realistic options.
When there is a need to isolate objects for presentations, I'd rather rely on masking them through the Render ID channel.

            Best,
            Matthias

              Hi Matthias,

yes, I don't post so often here anymore, since I stick at VfR2 and I'm waiting for a stable VfR3 release.

One of the usages of "only in secondary" is for creating controlled light effects on walls. For example you have TV with back light on the wall. You need a large smooth light effect. Best you create a flat surface in the size of the glow effect and apply a gradient glow like you think it should be looking. Set it "only in secondary" and you get the perfect glow.

Also some times my clients like to get a light effect through small gaps with soft long light gradient. Impossible per light sources or direct emitters, but possible per invisible emitters floating over the gap. Both tricks used at the little part of the attached project image.

And I don't want to forget the initial reason for releasing the feature for VfR2 - simple hidden walls. For example I need to render small airplane lavatories often. I need to look through the wall in the small closed space and the hidden wall needs to be visible in the mirror. Often at this wall is a large metal handle placed. For wall and handle I create two extra materials with the option "only in secondary" enabled.

I kind of disappeared for a while, myself
However, I'm going to be a regular visitor now that we've moved to 3.40, somewhat prematurely (as it seems). My fault, after I didn't test the new build thoroughly enough... we're going to return to the old version on two computers, so we can keep up with the jobs.

Just checked the Asset Editor: the secondary options are there!

                Best,
                Matthias

Great, thank you. Since there is no Rhino 6 version yet, I can't quick check or test something. I hope Rhino 6 will be released soon. Or Chaosgroup will be so kind a release a R6 version too. (Come on guys, other render plugin teams do it too. )

We're closely following the Rhino 6 development process. Current plan is to add support once it is commercially released.

                    Kind regards,
                    Peter
