  • denoise alpha channel

    Hi guys,

Is there a way to apply the denoiser to the alpha channel? When using the material wrapper i'd like for the shadows alpha to be as smooth as the denoised channel (if that makes sense).

    Thanks,

    Trav

This has come up today for me...I thought I had it working in some look dev scenes, but in a studio shot with a white background, and shadow catcher, my shadows are very grainy, and being ignore by the denoiser...therefore taking a 1min render up to possibly 3-4mins.

Just saw that this is a Rhino thread!...we have the same issue when working in Maya.

      Hi guys,

Can you please describe the issue in more details?
In my tests the alpha channel is denoised by default both when displayed in the VFB and when saved to a file.

Hi Konstantin. I made this reply while running look dev tests in RT. I was not getting any denoised shadow results while running RT, while the rest of the shot was denoised. In final renders, the results were better.

To see rapid denoiser updates during IPR you have to increase the Post effects rate
Setting it to 100 will ensure that the denoised result is updated as frequently as possible.
It is a good idea to use one of the quick denoising engines (like Nvidia or the Open Intel option) combined with a high update rate during IPR and switch to the V-Ray denoiser and rate of 0 for the final rendering.
We have a new Auto denoising mode in V-Ray 7 for Rhino and SketchUp which does exactly that. I guess in Maya you'll have to switch manually.

Its not that the updates arent rapid...in RT mode the matte shadow is not denoised AT ALL. I have not found a setting that denoises it unless I do a final render.
