  • Looking for Ignore Objects in Secondary

    Hi All,

I'm looking for the feature "Ignore objects in secondary" (or equivalent) in V-Ray 3.6. I've used this feature for the last 9 years to have an object ignore other objects that are intersecting it. I've searched all over looking for this material feature and have been unable to find a solution. The old V-Ray 2 material seems to work in 3.6, but when I try to create a new 3.6 material, I am unable to recreate the effect needed.

    Hello,

You can try overriding the background material.
Create an Override Material, slot the existing one as base and use another material with opacity set to 0 to override the base Reflections/Refractions.

To achieve the opposite effect, you can use a Generic material's Material Options > Raytrace Properties > Only in Secondary.

    Kind regards,
    Peter

Hi Peter, could it be possible to bring back the little option please? For the little task it was the right way and the workaround is quite a lot more work.

        Hello,

The v2.0 checkbox does not allow selective control which is achievable with Override material. Furthermore, it is yet one more situational option which may clutter the Material UI while providing benefits in a narrow range of user cases.
Whether an checkbox akin to v2.0 or a brand new design is worth reimplementing will be decided later on. I've logged this for internal discussion.

        Kind regards,
        Peter

This appears to have worked for my needs. Thank you Peter for the support!

I keep seeing posts about how functionality has been removed in the name of making the UI look prettier.
Disabling this particular items workflow that we worked hard with ASGVis on implementing creates problems for fast and efficient jewelry rendering. Please reconsider some of these decisions that affect usability for the sake appearance, especially when the new team doing the changes might not be aware of the history behind it being the way it is. Relearning software that wasn't broken is very costly for us as users.

              Hello, Travis,

There is no functionality removed in this case. On the contrary, it is now possible to override Refraction and Reflection separately.

V-Ray for Rhino is constantly evolving partly based on the research and progress made by our developer teams and partly on decisions driven by popular user feedback. The main idea behind the v3 interface is not to trim functionality but to optimize as much of our settings as possible in order to leave users focused on the design process rather than technicalities. This is a philosophy also shared in V-Ray Next.
If you feel there are things no longer achievable or changes hindering your workflow, be sure to let us know!

              Kind regards,
              Peter

Hi Peter.Chaushev would you mind expanding on how to create the override material? I'm struggling to figure it out.

                  Hi guys,

First of all, you might want to check the following discussion out (login with your chaosgroup.com account):
                  https://discourse.chaosgroup.com/t/h...terials/243/12

The reason for removing the Ignore objects option was not to make the UI clean but its legacy implementation.
It was relying on a back-end which is no longer fully supported in V-Ray Next core.
Additionally, its an option that is not based on physical reality and should not be commonly used.

On the other hand, I understand that it was an important part of some specific jewelry visualization workflows.
This is why we'll bring it back with the next updated using an internal workaround I've illustrated in the discourse thread.
The option will be present in the Wrapper material and not the standard V-Ray BRDF.

                  Regards,
                  Konstantin

Great, thank you for the nice move. I hope it will work in GPU mode too, since GPU RT and jewelry are a great combination for fine tuning setups.

I found a little simple trick to get the ignore objects in secondary - the dim distance feature at 0 doe's the job.

                        Correct.
This on the other hand will not affect refraction.

And by the way, the option is available in the Wrapper material in the latest stable build.
