  • Dome light questions and requests

I have a couple of questions about dome lights that I haven't found answered in the documentation:

1.- What is the difference between the "Dome light at point" and "Dome light as sphere" ? They both seem to handle environment textures and able to have the direction changed when "Use transform" is enabled although with the "at point" type the direction is only modifiable after the light is inserted whereas the "dome" type allows you to rotate it at insertion time. Is there any specific purpose for each type?
On this subject, can I ask that the directional arrow be rotated by design 180 degrees in the widget ?. Most sky hdr's have the sun or bright source of light approximately midway on the x axis of the image so it would be more intuitive if the arrow indicated the direction of the light source as it does in directional lights. Right now it's pointing in reverse direction which makes the light direction handling very confusing. So now for example, when the arrow points towards North the light actually comes from North.

2.- What is the purpose of the checkbox labelled "Sync env." shown in the Rhino properties of the dome light? When checked, the color swatch turns gray (and stays gray even when unchecked).

3.- Can also request that the dome be selectable by clicking on the dome itself and not only on the arrow? In busy scenes I find that the dome sphere would be easier to select since it's bigger that the arrow inside.

    Hello,

    1. Dome Light as Sphere creates a V-Ray Dome Light with Sphere shape (as opposed to the default Hemisphere). Furthermore, it allows setting initial widget size and position of the arrow (points in the cursor direction while holding the left mouse button (and Shift button optionally). The different methods are more of a legacy from previous versions rather than intended general design.
    2. When the Sync Env. checkbox is enabled the current (active) Rhino environment will have its properties copied over to the V-Ray Dome Light. Keep in mind that disabling the checkbox does not restore the previous Dome Light settings.
    3. This is already logged. Cannot give any ETA though, this is not high on the priority list. Keep in mind that unlike the sphere/hemisphere widget the Dome Light arrow's size is static in the Rhino viewport.

Let me know if you have any further questions or requests!

    Kind regards,
    Peter

      Thanks Peter.
Not sure that I understand point #1. The Sphere Dome light still shows a hemisphere once created, regardless if I choose sphere or hemisphere from the "Shape" pulldown. However, my main complaint is, again, that although the placement method by choosing the direction with the mouse is great, the light source in the HDR is actually opposite to what the arrow indicates.
