  • Wish: Preview Mesh of .vrscene files loaded in GH

I love using the .vrscene file format to load a whole scene into Rhino or Grasshopper. Lets face it, Rhino is not made for setting up scenes, so we usually set them up in 3DS Max or C4D.

In Rhino you can import a vrscene and choose between a preview mesh, full mesh or box.

In Grasshopper though you don't get any preview other than the box (which is okay to check the rough scale of things, but otherwise pointless). So if you could output at least the preview mesh in the GH node, that would be very much appreciated.

Right now what I have to do is import the scene in Rhino, then set things up in GH, delete the scene in Rhino again and load it in GH.

For a single object just having a preview box is okay, but having a bounding box for a whole scene??

    Thanks for considering.

    Noted.
Proxy previews with high face count (and high number of instances) may add an unnecessary load on your system and hinder Grasshopper's performance.
Using bounding box previews is a good compromise in this regard and keeps up with our effort to keep V-Ray in GH as streamlined as possible.

I'll pass along your request to the dev team for consideration.

    Kind regards,
    Peter

      Hey Peter.

I get that you want to create a compromise, but there are a million ways to hinder performance in these tools. Don't limit an option that is sensible just because some people might not use it properly. Grasshopper is not a realtime tool. Its a power tool where it is normal for solutions to take up to several minutes. We use Rhino and Grasshopper to push boundaries and do things that are not possible with other tools, so Grasshopper users expect flexibility in the tools they can use. So please, if its simply an option that you could have enabled with no big effort, but decided that you wouldn't include it "to make it easier"... dont. Grasshopper is a complicated tool. Vray is a complicated tool. Having something in Vray, but then excluding it from Vray for Grasshopper makes no sense. If I enable full preview of a vrscene in Vray my 3D software also might get slow, but the option is there.

So please please dont make Vray for Grasshopper a beginners tool. Thats not what it is for and you can still have those options, but power users will use it to push things to the limit. I know that a full preview of a scene will make GH slower, but thats to be expected and anyone who has used Grasshopper for more than a day will know that and will know how to deal with that. On the other hand, not having the option of showing a full (or at least partial) preview of a vrscene using grasshopper means that loading a vrscene in Grasshopper is pointless, since I want to place the things I create in Grasshopper in different vrscene files and I need to see where to place it. Having just a box means I cant and then that whole component becomes useless to this task, even though the capability would be there.

      Thanks for passing it on!
