  • Block and Materials and some other Items

    Hello all,

After having vented my frustration with Vray and Block I have decided to try to turn my anger into a constructive force.

    My wishes are the following:

    1. When purge Vray materials, materials nested in blocks are retain irrelevant of the block type (embeded or linked)

    2. When purging Vray materials any materials that are applied to a layer are also retained.

    3. A side issue I raised some time ago, the ability to Distribute a render cross platform, eg Win / OSX / Linux.

    And my final request.

    4. Vray material overide, the ability to exclude objects from the overide using specific materials, very useful when glass is in a scene.

    Hey there,
it's always funny when people get angry at computer programs - and I like your way of channeling your fury

    1. That's a true pain, I'd love to see this issue solved as well!
    2. I didn't come across this problem, so far. My layer materials always stay there when purging materials.
    3. That works, says Devin of ASGvis. They run PC Masters and Mac slaves in the office. ...Devin?
    4. I have an approach that lets me do this kind of effect without any changes in software:

    - My scenes usually have one layer per material.
    - Select all layer, apart from glass layer.
    - Copy objects to new layer.
    - Assign standard material.
    - Render.

    It's a matter of seconds

    Cheers,
    Matt

      @mat:

one layer per material? hehe haven't thought of that.
can you give a detailed example? kind of confused here

      thanks mat

Re: Block and Materials and some other Items

        Artu,
well I create layers like this:

        Paint Blue
        ABS Silver
        Glass
        Rubber Grey

...then, I assign the respective materials to each layer.
In my workflow this saves a lot of time and makes for a tidy structure.
If I need to combine parts with different materials, I run the _group command. Alternatively, I go for a sub-layer option:

        Object A Grip
Object A Grip - ABS Silver
Object A Grip - Rubber Grey

        Object A Body
Object A Body - ABS Silver
        Object A Body - Glass

        Object B Body
Object B Body - Paint Blue
Object B Body - ABS Silver

        ...and so on.
Depending on complexity or needs of the project and its rendered output.

        Hope this helps!

        Cheers,
        Matt

Re: Block and Materials and some other Items

          1. we currently aren't recursing in to blocks at all really, and we plan to for the next release.
          2. sounds like bug that we'll likely try to fix in the next release
          3. yeah, we've had that working since April on SketchUp, it'll be in the next release of VfR (we don't support Linux yet, I'm just talking about mac/pc)
          4. We added that feature a month or two ago to SketchUp, and we'll be moving that over to VfR as soon as we can.

I use the same techique, I just miss this setup from 3dsmax.

That advantage it if you allow vray to remember the materials to exclude from the override, you set thing up once and then its at your fingertips forever, if you save the settings and use consistent material names

My other request is you start playing the lottery, so you can afford more developers

Maybe if we fix enough bugs and improve the product more, we won't have to

If the the new VfR is stable and faster developed, selling VfR should be like a win in a lottery. There is not better engine.
