  • Issues with Transparent PNG rendering incorrectly or not at all

I have a simple transparent png that I had applied to a face in sketchup. I had been using another rendering program and it rendered without a problem, as it looked on the sketchup model. I've just installed vray and am having a problem getting it to render correctly.

The image was imported into sketchup as an image, not a texture as I did not want it to repeat. It was placed on a face in a specific location. .However, because it is an image and not a texture, it's not available to me in the Vray asset window so there are no properties that I can play with. In sketchup, I have the image to cast no shadows, so if that is what's happening here, I'm not sure why as the the surrounding transparent area is black. The png is a simple png image with an alpha channel. If someone can please point out what I should be doing here, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Explode it and it will be a texture..

When an image file with alpha channel is placed in the Diffuse slot and you wish to display its transparency, be sure to allow using it as opacity source by enabling this checkbox and having the source mode set to "Diffuse Texture Alpha": Click image for larger version Name:	using_png_alpha_channel_for_opacity.jpg Views:	1 Size:	19.6 KB ID:	1071483

      Kind regards,

Thanks kenancakir, I actually did find that solution buried an a thread somewhere and it did work.

But Peter, just trying to understand what you are trying to explain. I tried to reproduce the scenario where I could implement what you are describing and the issue is, that as an image placed on a surface in sketchup does not show up in vray assets, until it is exploded. So are you saying also that the image must be exploded first? Or is there some other way to get to setting you are describing. I did look at the setting for the exploded image and it seems to be set to that setting by default.

kenancakir correctly pointed out to the solution. V-Ray recognizes images directly imported in SketchUp and renders them as they appear.
To modify the image, however, it must be converted to a texture applied to material. The SketchUp logic dictates that this happens when you explode the Image definition.
When this is done, if the material opacity is not automatically set in V-Ray (as in your case), it needs to be adjusted as described in my previous post.
