  • Geometry shoots off and can't undo

Hi, I don't post often so apologies if this has already been answered or I'm posting in the wrong place. I had a quick look but whasn't sure which search terms to use for the problem.

Since using VRay as a plug in I have an issue where something I'm working on- usually a line will shoot off, dragging what it's attached to with it and for no apparent reason. It's quite comical but annoying as when this happens I can't 'undo' within sketchup. It says someting like update vray material next to undo on the drop down menu (edit) but it happens when I've not been updating the vray materials. It happens on all files but normally after working on it for some time and then once it's happened once it usually happens again. Photo attached to show what I mean.

    Appreciate any help.

    Hi sarah@rengadesign

Regarding the undo, if the command is executed a number of times, does it not eventually revert the geometry modification?

In respect to the actual issue, are you using any other 3rd party plugins? Could you please provide a step-by-step description how to reproduce the issue?

      Hi thanks for the reply.

My extensions are Laubwerks, twinmotion, Vray and texture position.

I've only recently installed texture position and the fault was happening before that.

Once the crazy shooting off has happened there is no option to undo. I just see the text 'update vray material' next to the undo command in the menu which makes me think the fault is related to vray but I could be wrong. It just actually happened again about 20min ago. I'll attach another image. In htis instance the fault occured when I was pulling the face of the lintol out to make it project and the face sort of twisted off into the air. I can't really replicate the fault on command as it seems to happen at random. It happens when I move or push pull. Not on activating a group or opening a componenent but actually moving a line or face in some way.

After some extensive testing I'm afraid I was not able to reproduce this behavior.

Does it occur only with specific scene(s)?
Next time you encounter this bug, could you please check whether it has occurred right after the project is saved or auto-saved?
If you get the chance to work on a scene for an extensive period of time without needing V-Ray, could you please disable it from the SketchUp Extension Manager and see if the the faulty behavior is still reproducible?

Right now, there is nothing in V-Ray we can think of that may be interfering with the objects' topology in such a bizarre way.

        Kind regards,
        Peter

Hi Peter, thank you for looking into this. It usually happens when I've been modelling for some time but I'll try an be aware about the potential autosave coincidence. Got a chunk of modelling to do tomorrow will keep an eye on it and try with V-ray disabed.
          Many thanks,

          Sarah

you don't happen to be working in OSX, are you?

I've seen some programs in OSX behave oddly, sometimes whatever is under your mouse cursor will be dragged by moving the mouse, even if you haven't clicked. Something like this may be flinging that object into orbit when you move your mouse quickly up to the menus, or something like that.

some behavior like this in sketchup is due to having your model to far away from the origin or an axis inside a group/component that also has geometry far away from its origin - I see this a lot this imports from WYSIWYG

I had this weird behavior start in Sketchup Pro 2019...I believe. I have not definitively tied it to any software or plugins yet. Also, it does not have anything to do with distance from origin, (in my case), as I have it happen when I'm modeling early on in projects and have not imported any outside assets yet. I will say, I'm leaning more toward it being a Sketchup bug....because it happens a lot before initiating Vray. I will say that while you can't undo when this happens, it is possible to move the geometry back to its original spot....just take it one axis at a time. Sometimes, if it is very complex geometry you may have to erase some 'sticky' lines and draw a few edges back in. But usually just get away with moving the 'jumped' geometry back to where it is supposed to be.

One thing I have happen from time to time that I believe is a VRay bug is: an edited group will show up rendered in a random location....nothing can cure this...exploding, regrouping, etc. Only fix is to close SU and restart. Then it is resolved.

Edit: I just reread this and saw that you mentioned autosave. Could be an autosave conflict. I have to disable autosave when using Interactive rendering....if not, sketchup crashes. But anyway, I think it's a possibility for sure that the bug this post is actually about could be happening when the file autosaves while I'm moving geometry....

(BTW, I'm actually glad to hear that someone else has this problem....I always thought it was just some phantom bug on my machine....)

Have you encountered this issue multiple times with a single project?
Has the group been edited during the rendering process or perhaps it has been in Edit mode when the renderer was initiated?

GDecker is on point that the most common cause of misplaced geometry is coordinate precision failure when objects are too far away from the scene origin point (0,0,0).
