  • Vray 5 for Sketchup Crashes

Hi, I just upgraded from Vray 5 Beta to release version 5 and as soon as I try and open the frame buffer Vray and Sketchup crash, I am running Sketchup Pro 2020.2 and OSX 10.15.7 on a Macbook Pro. Would anyone know anything that could help.

many thanks and look forward to be able to use it (or should I go back to the Beta for the moment as that seemed stable)

    Dan

    Hi Dan,

    Thanks for reporting this.
Actually there is not much of a difference between beta 5 and the official version so I doubt this is caused by a late change.
Which beta version have you been using before installing the official?
Also, does this happen every time and if so, can you list the exact steps you take to reproduce it?

    Regards,
    Konstantin

      Hello, Dan,
Could you please share more about your problem by answering the following questions?

      1. What beta build did you last use?
      2. Does the problem occur when you try to open the VFB in a brand new file or only when working with specific project? If it is caused by a specific project, please share it with support@chaosgroup.com for further investigation.
      3. Could you please provide the a sample crash file (located in /Users/***/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/) and log file (Users/***/.ChaosGroup/V-Ray\ for\ SketchUp/VRayForSketchUp.log)?

      Kind regards,
      Peter

EDIT: My colleague was faster to reply. Nevertheless, pleas provide the info requested in both posts so we can assist you further.

        Hi Konstantin
I am not sure what Beta version I was using and it has gone from my downloads section so I am not sure, I thought it may be the licence server, it is saying that I can't connect but then gives me the go ahead. I have upgraded the lcence server to the lateste version from your site. It does happen every time (which is a bit of a bummer as I am in the middle of a project). The bugsplat from Sketchups first line says *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'char const*', reason: 'SIGFPE' but I don't really know what that means . It happens when I try and hit render after install. I will close and restart everything and try again. thanks and speak soon

            Hi, thanks for the info.
You can zip the file and share the archive I believe.

Thanks Konstantin. In the meantime, I cleaned my caches, disable and re-enabled the extension in extension manager and reinstalled Vray. I tried it on a completely new file, no lights or any geometry and it seems to work fine. It keeps on crashing on a file that previously had Vray lights and components in it however. The Vray for sketchup pallette opens up but then hangs and crashes. I will try and replicate some different scenarios. many thanks for your quick response so far. Do you mind if I DM you the log file, I don't know what is in it and am wary of posting onto a forum

              best

If you can share the file I'd test it out right away - it'll actually help us a lot.

                Sure thing.
I'll give it to the developers right away.

Hi Dan. Are you getting BugSplat dialog as well? (The dialog might appear the next time you start SU.) If so, can you submit it with some info in the description or email field that I can use to look it up in the database?
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

Wiping old vray materials solves it, i believe warehouse models that contains vray 2 settings cause it.. That is how i solved..

                      HI kenancakir,

Can you please share a model that crashes on load?
This should not be happening even when the model contains V2 materials.

Hi, one of my follower on facebook told me they have a file and when they hit render it crushes.. They were using vray next.. When they sent me the file it took about 15 minute to open and when i hit render it crushes with vray 5 beta 4.. I couldn't get render until wipe the scene.. I thought it was because of old warehouse models, may be contains oldest vray settings or another render engine settings.. I can send you the mail contains that model i get..

Hi, unfortunately the file is deleted, because of time limit, it was on a local site like wetransfer.. I have a file but i don't remember if it is the original one or not, i tried to get a render with beta 5 and render starts after a couple of minutes, slower than my regular files, but it worked.. My first attempt was with beta 4

Just my 2 Cents Dan, I installed release version of Vray 5 from the previous stable release and am having similar issues. Created a fresh model to play around with some textures. With only basic geometry, every time I click render, the frame buffer window no longer functions (it disappears and is not able to be recalled using taskbar or function keys) until I restart Sketchup. I get the impression that the issue for me is multi monitor setup with various scaling, Vray 5 despises this setup. I should note that utilizing the CPU engine, it will render once or twice before the frame buffer window becoming unusable until restart. switching to CUDA engine the frame buffer window is unpredictable, sometimes producing a few renders before it becomes unusable, sometimes it never functions as expected. I should say that Vray utilizes my PC resources to the equivalent of a full render, but no way to view or save the render.

Reverting to previous stable release as v5 seems rushed. My apologies for the quickly written reply.

I'd like to note that I love what I'm seeing in v5 features, just needs another pass through QC and QoL adjustments here and there (not resizing windows upon initiating renders, changing full screen to restore down, just to give examples).
