  • Vray 5 UI Slow

    Hi Guys,

We have been using Sketchup 2019 and Vray 3.6 for a pretty long time up until a few weeks back. Recently i decided it would be worth upgrading so we went for Sketchup 2021 and Vray 5. I can't help but feel like Vray 5's UI is slow now compared to the older version we were using. It takes sometimes 5-10 seconds for a material to appear in our material list after dragging it in from the library (yeah i know, first world problems) but i noticed with bigger project where we use a lot of Laubwerk assets the whole UI becomes painfully slow. It literally keeps freezing while Sketchup works in the background fine (we can move around in it etc.).

I'm wondering if i'm the only one experiencing this? Got three computers in the office. All 3 "suffer" from this slow down (The one i'm using has 32GB RAM). It's not the end of the world and we can still work without any major interruptions from this, but still i was expecting the upgrade to speed things up rather than slowing it down

If there are any tips on how to speed this up or what could be the issue please let me know.

    Regards,

    Hello,

Generally, the assets preview window have an option to downscale its resolution in order to provide faster feedback. Simply click its "1/1" dropdown and choose a smaller fraction. For more info, please check https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...-PreviewSwatch
With that said, what you describe seems like abnormal behavior. The swatch scene should not work sluggishly when compared to V-Ray 3. Can you please answer a few questions that may help us undestand the situation better?
    1. Does this slowdown occur only with projects that have a multitude of material assets?
    2. Is there a running render process when you experience this slowdown?
    3. Does the Asset Editor perform noticeably better when you stop the asset swatch preview altogether?
    4. Which materials are affected - newly created ones / V-Ray preset library materials / Lawbwerk materials / pre-existing custom materials ?
    5. Is there any slowdown when you have no other 3rd-party extensions running in SketchUp beside V-Ray?
And a couple of additional questions:
What are the system specs of your machines?
Can you please make sure the process C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\V-Ray for SketchUp\extension\vrayneui-win32-x64\vrayneui.exe is not blocked in any way by your anti-virus or security software?

    Kind regards,
    Peter

        Hello, Lorenzo,
We made some tests based on your feedback and actually found a regression that causes some slowdown when loading the previews of materials assets. Our dev team is already onto it!

Apart from this exact issue, could you please describe in more detail what you experience? Does the problem occur only with specific projects?
It would help us narrow down its cause if you are able provide a sample scene exhibiting this UI slowdown as well as your system specs. You can send all info at https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new (please make sure you reference this forum thread in your message).

        Kind regards,
        Peter

          Hi Peter.Chaushev ,

          Good to hear that!

I have been in contact already for a week or so with Diana from the support team, Request: 6238.

I can share the 3Dmodel if you wish: in case so, should I export it as packed or is enought the sketchup file?

          Best,

          Lorenzo

Packing the project and sharing the resulting archive with our Support team would be best. Thank you!
My colleague, Diana, will get back to you after we fully investigate the scene.

            Regards,
            Peter

                Hi lorenzo_servi,

V-Ray 5 for SketchUp, update 2 was released yesterday.
The asset previews should be much more responsive now.
Please give it a try and let us know what you think.

                  Hi konstantin_chaos ,

                  Thank you.
I need to re-install it in the machine. So I will test is as soon as I have a free-time between projects!
