  • Displacement Material Crashes/Stops Render

Hi guys I have a pebble material that I use in nearly every landscape I do. For the past month or so, when this material is applied, the render will get three quarter way through then just stop. If I break apart the group the pebbles are applied to and re-render it is fine.
I have used the same texture for ages and would like to continue to use it. Would anyone know why this displacement material would cause this? I have tried making the group, then removing material and re-applying but that doesn't work either.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Cheers,
    Nick

    Hello, Nick,
Could you please pack a small scene that exhibits this problem (Use the SketchUp menu Extensions > V-Ray > Pack Project) and send it over for investigation via https://www.chaosgroup.com/help/cont.../scene#options ?

    Kind regards,
    Peter

Hi there Peter, I just got the original file that was not rendering. I deleted tress/lighting etc to make it smaller to pack and did a test render and it now works. Earlier, with all planting etc it would not render until exploded the group and rendered the rocks 'flat'. So I am not sure what is going on. It seems that it will only happen if the model is more complex or larger in filesize?

It is hard to say. The issue might be due to insufficient memory and not a specific displaced object.
If you are able to reproduce it with your original scene, my colleagues can take a look if you are willing to send it over a file-sharing service of your choice.
The render progress log may also hold valuable info.

Hi there Peter, I will try and replicate with the original file now. But I have found when this issue has arisen, as soon as I explode that particular group it will render. Either way, I will try and replicate now.

Hi there Peter, I just went back to the original file and added the displaced garden bed. It now renders. I tried at least half a dozen times earlier today and it wouldn't render. It also wouldn't export to Chaos Cloud - I would click on the cloud and it would say initializing render, but then not go anywhere from there. I will have to wait until the next job when it does it again and save the log, to see if that shows what is happening. I wouldn't have thought it was a video issue as I am running a 24gb Titan card. But I just can't be sure. Thanks for your help anyway, Cheers, Nick

This is how far the render gets - which is the same every time it 'stops'

Hi there Peter, just another follow up. after the render 'stops' this is what happens if you leave it half an hour to finish. Image shows how the render 'finishes' and log attached. Cheers, Nick

                      Hi AMG445

From the log you sent over I can see that you are getting CUDA error 700. Have you tried updating your NVidia GPU drivers to the latest recommended ones? Does it render as expected on CPU?

If updating doesn't help, do forward the project files (please use the Pack Project tool from Extensions > V-Ray > Pack Project) through our contact form so we can try to reproduce this. Make sure to mention this thread in the email along with OS version, CPU/GPU and GPU driver specifications. Thanks.
