  • CANT USE .VISMAT or .MAT !! How to import or convert to .VRMAT ??

    Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me! I've searched high and low and can't find a fix that works today.

V-Ray 5 for SketchUp doesn't seem to allow me to use .vismat or .mat materials, I can't find a work around to convert the files into the only format it lets me use (.vrmat)?

Please please please can someone help me...

    Thanks,

    L

    Hi luke_towner

Please keep in mind that .vismat files are considered deprecated and are no longer supported. The current format the V-Ray Asset Editor uses to read assets' data (XML) is .vrmat. We recommend using newly created materials or our over 500 material presets from the library.
Please review this article from our official documentation concerning our Preset Material Library: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...terial+Library

To read more about Migrating from Previous Versions, please visit: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...eviousVersions

Regarding the .mat materials typically coming from 3ds max, you can use the VRmat Converter within the host app so you can convert and save materials as .vrmat files. To read more, please visit: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...Rmat+Converter

      Hi Nikoleta,

Thank you for your reply. A few places have mentioned this over 500 material presets from the library but can't seem to find it? I've downloaded and have the default materials but although I haven't counted, don't seem to be 500 of them.

Thank you for the article re: presets, I've read it before and also seen the migrating from previous versions article also (although this one doesn't mention old file types).

The VRM converter would be perfect! Do you need to own 3DS max for this to work though? I have a license for 3DS Max although am a Mac user and since let my parallels license elapse so don't have access to it.

      Thanks,

      L

I was going to agree with this but I think 500 might be about right. I’ll count them later as I have often been wrong in the past but my guess would have been that the native materials library in VRay for Sketchup contains at most 200 materials. Lots of metals but around 20 diagrammatic materials, around 30 concrete materials, etc.

I suspect that there are more than it seems - especially as I tend to use only a few of the categories.
