  • V-Ray 5 MAC huge memory leak

When rendering, my computer warns me to shut down SketchUp due to memory loss. This has happened since starting using Laubwerk, Skatter, Globeplants & Vray Chaos cosmos models. Guessing it should be the opposite as using models from 3d library should be more risky. The model size is about 160MB, but the same happens when working with a model at about 60MB. Please see enclosed screen shot for the message I'm getting. I have tried excluding Globeplants, and the Vray Cosmos but the problem is reoccurring regardless of what I do. Should I not work with Skatter for example? Any clues of what this is? I'm working in draft mode, low resolution in Vray. Many thanks in advance! Madeleine

    Hello, madeleine_ljungfeldt ,
Thank you for reporting this issue!
Could you please provide a bit more info?
    1. Does the issue occur only after rendering or the memory usage ramps up even without rendering?
    2. Is the screenshot with the 53GB usage captured during an ongoing process?
Additionally, please share a scene that exhibits this issue for investigation. You can do this by packing the scene using the menu Extensions > V-Ray > Pack Project.
The archived file can then be shared with our Support team via https://www.chaosgroup.com/help/cont.../scene#options or a file-sharing service of your choice.
Please make sure to include a link to this forum thread in your message.

    Looking forward to your reply!

Peter.Chaushev Hi! Here are some answers:

      1. yes, while rendering only.
      2. yes, that is correct. I'm unable to finalize the render due to the message included in the screenshot.

I will supply you with the scene. Thanks for getting back to me.

Peter.Chaushev Hi Peter! Any progress in the investigation? I'm unable to work in any of my projects until I know what is causing this. Thanks, Madeleine

            Hello again, madeleine_ljungfeldt ,
The abnormal memory usage was caused by the Skatter grass you've used. Your project contains a high amount of full-geometry grass components. When V-Ray loads the scene each grass blade's mesh is loaded in the scene, resulting in ~50GB worth of geometry data in total.
To solve this problem, you can either:
            - remove the current Skatter objects and reimport them as "Proxies", not "Full Geometry". This will tremendously lower the memory usage
            - remove the current Skatter objects and set up V-Ray Fur with its "Level of detail. This will also drastically improve memory usage

A potential crash was also found thanks to the project file you submitted. Our dev team is currently looking into it.
If you happen to encounter any other issues with V-Ray or need assistance applying the solutions I suggested, please let me know!

            Kind regards,
            Peter

Peter.Chaushev thank you so much! Tried your first option and imported as proxies which really helped! So relieved, thank you!
Please let me know what you find out about the crash. Sketchup crashes quite frequently... thanks again. Madeleine

Glad to hear you can successfully render your scene again!
The other problem I mentioned is still under investigation. When resolved, our dev team will include a fix in the next V-Ray update we publish.

If you have any projects that crash frequently while you use V-Ray, please share them with us via https://www.chaosgroup.com/help/cont.../scene#options
A step-by-step description of your actions prior to the crash and the SketchUp crash file that is stored in /Users/user/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ will be extremely helpful to finding a solution.

                Kind regards,
                Peter

Hi! Had this issue on mac too. Small project just with texturing dummy caused sketchup to use 30gb of memory and 360% of processor time used by v-ray.

                    Hello, photohomka ,
                    Thank you reporting this!
Please check whether your project has V-Ray Fur without "level of detail" enabled or perhaps numerous copies of components with very detailed geometry (very high number of faces).
If you are not able to find what is causing the excessive resource consumption, please use Extensions > V-Ray > Pack Project and submit the resulting archive to https://www.chaosgroup.com/help/cont.../scene#options for investigation.
