  • Stone wall displacement

    Hi guys,

Hope is all good. I have few problems using displacement texture map.
Attached simple model to show what my issue is. I am rendering a stone with a window opening. I need a bit of guidance on displacement please, and I am sorry if this has been already covered.

-Is it better normal displacement or 2d displacement ? Can someone en light me ?

-I attached the parameter i am using, what is the typical value you would use for a wall like this ?

-How would you make the edge more realistic ? I am trying the bump local edge map (already discussed in a previous post, but i still get the sharp corner).

-Using displacement obviously the texture extrude out and "eat " the window frame. I tried with the minus "shift" parameter, it work where I have the window but it also make mt wall less ticker.

Thanks a lot to every reader and comment it is really much appreciated

"Shift" parameter is not supposed to be used on the walls as i know, draw vertical lines 5 cm away from the corners and you will have nice disp efect on the corners.. There is no need for corners to use bump for rounding just draw lines as i mention.. Material should be applied both back and front faces, or just aply from outside of the group..

      Hi giacomo_testi,

The 2D mode is faster to generate and more performant.
One of it's downsides is it doesn't work with 3D procedural textures but this is not wat you're after.

      Your settings look fine.
The only thing you should be careful with is the Keep Continuity option. When you enable it the corners will look better but the 'normals' of the wall geometry will be negatively affected.
As kenancakir already explained, adding a couple of additional edges on all sides of the corner would help with that.

The round corners approach would not help you here because the displacement is itself is controlling the surface normals.
However, if you add the edges I suggested a smoother result will be rendered.

The Shift is the only procedural option you have.
If you want to move only the side where the frame is I'd suggest you do it manually.
