Artifacts when Section Plane is Active

I'm rendering a model that contains a section plane inside a group. When it is set to active I get strange artifacts showing in geometry not inside the group. the parts affected are a water material from Chaos Cosmos and some trees placed using V-ray scatter. Does anyone know what is going on here?
