  • Aborting rendering of Imported BIM-Models takes more than 10 minutes

    Hi together,

i hope you can help me, because i am running in troubles everytime working with BIM-Modells (without technical equipment, just walls, windows, maybe furnituer) exported to Sketchup from Allplan or Archicad (between 250-400 MB). The Models i receive from the offices are exported from Allplan/Archicad to Sketchup and all those models take more than 10 minutes when i abort the rendering. That makes it very slow, working with those models on larger projects. Any ideas? I guess, that this problem is not very new, as i am dealing with it since years...

I am running Sketchup 2024 with Vray for Sketchup 6.2.6
    on the following System:

    iMac 27" 2020
    CPU: 3,6 GHz 10-Core Intel Core i9
GPU: AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT, 16 GB
    RAM: 64 GB

    Hello johannes_zettel

I suggest testing some optimizations in your projects when importing these models. Keep in mind that they are large (based on your explanation) and likely contain a significant number of polygons, so it's expected for them to take some time to be processed during rendering and after the rendering process is stopped.
    Please try to:
    • Simplify your model - BIM models often contain highly detailed elements that may not be needed for your work. Simplify or remove excess geometry, such as small objects or unnecessary details that are not essential for your visualization.
    • Purge your file (Window>Model Info>Statistics>Purge Unused). This step may take some time to finish.
    • Convert your High-Polygon geometry to Proxy Mesh - Proxies significantly reduce the geometry load within SketchUp, making the scene lighter while allowing high-quality renders.
Please try these suggestions and share how it's going.

Many thanks. I will try your points Not sure if they will work. Could it be, that the number of "Groups" is an issue? These are very high. The model i use at the moment is an ArchiCAD-Export. Any recommendations here?

        Hi johannes_zettel

The nested groups can significantly slow down your working process and be an issue. In order to give you exact directions on how to improve this behavior, check some of the models you mention. If you agree, please open a new ticket in our system using this form, where you can attach your packed scene. Make sure to use our Pack Project Tool, as shown in this example.

It will be helpful if you paste the link from this forum post into the ticket so we can identify that the issue is related to your forum post.
