  • VRay and Sketchup Crash to Desktop (Bugsplat) - Scatter tool

My model has recently started crashing and is basically unusable since I started using the scatter tool. At first it started crashing when I would adjust falloff settings in the area modifier for a series of lines. Every time I adjust those values to change the falloff amount for the area exclusion coming from the lines, sketchup would crash. After that happened a few times, I restarted my computer and now I am unable to start VRay at all. I can open the model fine, but whenever I try to start VRay, Sketchup crashes. Deleting the scatter object (in sketchup) before opening vray allows me to open VRay. I'm not sure if I just hit an upper limit of what scatter can do or if the scatter object itself became corrupted somehow.

After deleting the scatter object and starting from scratch again, It is still crashing my model. the tool was working perfectly fine before and all of a sudden has become extremely unstable. Whenever I change the instances count (even to a lower number) it crashes Sketchup without fail.
Starting from a very low instance number (~1000) it STILL crashes. So it is definitely not an issue of too many instances causing some kind of memory overload.

I can reproduce the issue quite reliably. I copied the geometry involved into a new file. There is a grouped set of planar surfaces that I am using as the base for the scatter. There is another group of arcs which are being used for the area exclusion. And then there is a single vray mesh proxy that I made myself.

I can create the scatter with those three elements perfectly fine.
I can change the instance number to a very high number without problem.
I can add the curves as an area modifier and change the falloff and it works.
Where it seems to crash without fail, is when I change the scale and density sliders. Whenever I do so, I see the changes reflect briefly in the scatter preview, and then sketchup crashes to a bug splat.

edit: Using a basic object from the chaos cosmos browser instead of my own mesh proxy does not change anything. It crashes regardless of what object is being used as a guest.

Edit 2: I have determined that the issue must be coming from the base surface that I am using, because this feature works as expected when I use the same guest and area modifier objects on a brand new surface. I am not sure what is causing that surface to have this issue. The only notable features it has is that the edges have been hidden, and it has a custom texture applied to it with an opacity mask.

Edit 3: I am at a complete loss. Recreating the base surface which only consists of 3 planar rectangles, 2 of which are rotated, is YET AGAIN causing the crash. I have no idea what is going on and I need someone to fix this.
