  • Crashing during and after rendering with v 1.0

I am having a lot of crashes during the rendering phase with version 1.0 of Vray for Sketchup v. 6. These were not happening with the Vray Release Candidate 6 on the same version of Sketchup just a week ago. The only thing that has changed is I upgraded to the final version.

The crashes always happen when I try to save a screen shot during or after rendering using the save icon in the frame buffer window. It has happened 4 times today alone, completely closing Sketchup without a trace or giving me the Google Bug Splat screen before it crashes. The frame buffer is of course missing when I restart Sketchup meaning all thatrendering time is lost. I have been using Sketchup 6 Pro for a month or so without any of these problems (with both Vray Beta 3 and RC 6).

I am using Vray for Sketchup v. 1.0 (for sketchup 6) and Sketchup0 Pro version 6.0.515

    What gives guys?

    and to clarify

...and to clarify, the crashes always happen 1 of 3 ways:

    1. When I press the save button (floppy disc icon) in the frame buffer window I receive the save dialog box. When I start typing the name or try to choose jpg in the pulldown menu the dialog box and the rest of Sketchup freezes and I must manually quit.

    2. When I press the save button Sketchup immediately shuts down without saving.

    3. When I press the save button I get the bug splat screen but sketchup still shuts down.

Re: Crashing during and after rendering with v 1.0

Can you save your image if you specify for it to be saved before the render is started? I ask that for two reasons. First, if it does then you at least have a way to save your renderings, and the bug is relating to the process/how the image is saved when you go through the steps manually. Second, if your image doesn't save, then it may be related to how the image is being read or stored from or within the framebuffer itself, and the bug may then relate to that, or a hardware memory read/write issue(although this is probably not the case).

Well strangely it has not been an issue for the last few days. But yes, I can choose "save to file" and that works as long as the rendering finishes.

But sometimes you just want to save an in-progress rendering to get the general lighting, etc approved. Screenshots seem to work (as long as the frame buffer is rendering the image at 100%). But it is really weird that this would start only after I upgraded to version 1.0 but did not happen with RC6.

I am being extremely careful in the meantime and will try to notice anything of importance I might be doing should it start to happen again.

        Thanks,

        Gunnar

Re: Crashing during and after rendering with v 1.0

If it is crashing in the "save file dialog" that is out of our hands - that is an OS function call. Are you running on Vista?

Re: Crashing during and after rendering with v 1.0

I'm running XP Pro SP2. But the crashes do not always happen in the middle of navigating the save dialog box anyway. Often they happen the moment I hit the floppy disc looking icon in the Frame Buffer window crashing Sketchup entirely.

So far so good however (at least for the last 2 days). I wonder if maybe it might have been a network issue with our server (accessing the server seemed to take a long time on the day I having questions and the default save location was not set locally). If it happens again I will check back in.
