  • Bug splat when add texture and opening Material panel

    hi,

I've installed and tried the new RC2 1.00 56 on the last SK 6.4.112.

In a new and empty scene, I did a cube put an arroway texture ( resized down to 1500px) when I open the material editor, I got a Bugsplat....

Anybody else is experiecing the same issue ?

    Tom

Tom, no, I can't re-create your bug, but I'm glad you tried the arroway texture, which I haven't done yet.
My experience with the big texture is

    a) if you import it into sketchup, as a texture, and apply directly to a surface, it is created as a texture in sketchup ('materials') but not duplicated in vray materials.
    b) to get vray to recognise the material I had to create a 'new' material in sketchup.
    c) Using this large texture made navigating throgh the materials menus unbelievably slow, with a number of inexplicable screen refreshes.

I'll do another a ticket for the team.

Tom- I just tried reproducing this crash, but I was unsuccessful. We have already received the ticket by dcauldwell, and have made changes to the way that we handle imported textures. If you could submit a support ticket with some more detail about how you were able to reproduce this crash, we would really appreciate it.

        hi,

        Sure, I will do it.
I'm not familiar with the support ticket, though..
Is it via the web site's support link and the tab " I need help " ?

I think I've figured out when SU crashes due to the opening and closing of the V-Ray material editor. I've tried this several times and have been able to get it to crash every time.

Here are the steps, try it out and see if it crashes for you:

          1. Use the paint bucket to apply a material to a 'group' & sometimes a 'component'. If applied to a surface it did not crash for me.

          2. Adjust any of the settings for the material in the SketchUp material editor. Such as change the scale of a texture map, change the color etc.

          3. Then open the V-Ray material editor.

          4. Boom... You should get a Bug Splat...

I have the latest version of sketchup and the latest release of Vray (dated May 0

My biggest problem is getting the shadow settings to work. With the installation of the latest Vray, light is cast directly down only no matter what settings I have made to the GI (Skylight).

Any help there would be great...

Re: Bug splat when add texture and opening Material panel

TOM- Yes, to submit a support ticket, just click " V-Ray for Sketchup - I need help!", and then fill out the form. You should receive an email confirming that we received the bug report, shortly after submitting the bug. Then one of us will investigate the issue, and respond once we have some sort of attack plan.

fowens- We received and have responded to your support ticket about this issue. Just to let everyone else know, we have already fixed the shadow settings bug that was mentioned. Also, I went home last night and installed SketchUp Pro 6.4.112, as well as V-Ray for SketchUp 1.00.66 (internal build version). I had never installed SketchUp or V-Ray for SketchUp on that machine before, so it was a completely clean installation. I was unable to reproduce this bug by following any of the instructions I've been given to reproduce it so far. I would love to see this bug reproduce so that we can fix it though.

Just to make sure that we're all on the same page with this issue, let's make sure that we're all using the same versions of everything.

here's the specs for the machine I tested on last night:

            Hardware
            Motherboard: MB DFI LP[UT]nF4 SLI-DR Exp NF4 939
Graphics Card: PNY Nvidia Quadro FX1400 PCI-E
            Processor: AMD 64 |4400+ ATHLON X2 939
            Memory: OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit

            Software
            Operating System: Windows XP SP2
SketchUp Version: SketchUp Pro 6.4.112 (demo evaluation)
            V-Ray for SketchUp Version: 1.00.66

If you are using an older version of SketchUp Pro, or are using the free version of SketchUp, we need you to update to SketchUp Pro version 6.4.112. If you have an older version of V-Ray for SketchUp, and you are having this problem, please submit a support ticket about the issue, so that we can send you a link to the latest internal version of our software. Note: this version is only given out to those that are actively helping us test our software and track down bugs.

If you have previously installed our software, and would like to do a completely clean install, please do the following:

            1. Completely uninstall V-Ray for SketchUp

            2. Go to the folder "c:\Program Files\Google\SketchUp 6\Plugins", or wherever you have SketchUp installed.

            3. Verify that the file "VRayForSketchup.rb" and the folder "VRayForSketchUp" have been removed from that Plugins folder. If either the file or folder exists, delete them.

            4. If you're running Windows XP, go to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ASGvis". In Vista the folder will be located in "C:\ProgramData\ASGvis".If you see a folder named "VRayForSketchup", open it, and see if there's anything in that folder.

4 1/2. If you don't see the folders mentioned, it may be due to your computer's settings. This folder will most likely be hidden on your machine, so you may have to change your settings so it will show hidden folders. You should be able to set hidden folders as visible by opening "My Computer" and then clicking the "Tools" menu at the top, and then "Folder Options". Once you're in the folder options window, you should see a tab labled "View". If you click the view tab, and then select "Show hidden files and folders", you should now be able to view hidden folders.

            5. Once you've taken note of the contents of that folder, completely delete the folder "VRayForSketchUp" as well as anything that may be in that folder. Please let us know what was in that folder though. Most likely there are going to be some images in the "Textures" folder.

            6. Restart your computer. (Just to be safe)

            7. Reinstall our latest internal version of V-Ray for SketchUp. (again, you'll need to submit a bug report about this issue, before we'll give out the latest internal version.)

If you followed all of those steps correctly, you should have a nice and clean install of our product. Hopefully, once we all confirm that we're on the same page, we'll have better luck tracking down this bug and fixing it. If you have any further issues, please submit a support ticket about this issue so that our developers are kept firmly in the loop with any developments with this issue. Again guys, we really appreciate your patience and understanding with these bugs. We know how much of a headache these things can be, and are trying to resolve as many of these problems as we can, before we do a finalized release of our SR1.
