  • sketchup project texture

    hello everybody!
I was trying the "project texture" from sketchup (command corresponding camera).
Although sketchup texture is correctly applied then, when I render v-ray does not maintain the same map coordinates ....
    happens to you?

    ciao,davide!

    Re: sketchup project texture

Is the texture applied to groups or components, or the geometry itself?

If it's applied to the geometry itself, is the geometry contained inside scaled groups or components?

Also, what V-Ray version do you use?
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

      Latest V-Ray for SketchUp7 is SR1.5 (v1.05.30) Latest aviable
      Latest SketchUp7 is Latest aviable

for now I just tried on simple geometry (faces), but after your reply I did a test with a group (the parallelepiped that you see in the picture) as well as on the same geometry but "exploded" (faces only)
      ...
Here ... ! damn! the result is the same ... VRay renders not like the map is represented in sketchup ...

pity because I was growing: *) the idea of using this technique to work on background images ... then if the crop will be more work (in another post!)

excuse my English but I have written very hastily ... if you do not understand me and edited my post! ...

      hello, davide

It won't work on groups/components. But should work when applied to just the geometry itself.

However, I see the same as you though. Something is wrong here.
        Reproduced: http://www.thomthom.net/xfiles/Projected Texture.skp

Doing another test, it seems that V-Ray for Sketchup doesn't handle textures which has been tapered using the SU texture tool. It's not aware or not able to deal with the deformation.

        http://www.thomthom.net/xfiles/Manual%20Texturing.skp
Example file: Cube with three faces painted. The left is plain vanilla. The right is skewed so it fits the face, the topp face is tapered. Left and right renders correctly, topp one doesn't.
Also a problem if you use Fixed Pins to position a texture.

        Damien, care to comment?

boys ... you have any idea?
is a real shame that the game does not work ...

          in sketchup...

          any Ideas??

              Re: sketchup project texture

I did have an idea. And that was to use SU7's new Make Unique Texture function.
But on my local test here it renders the new unique texture gray for some reason. Not sure why.

                Re: sketchup project texture

Ah! When I used the Make Unique Texture function SU created a material where the texture filename was "*1.jpg". Which is an invalid filename. When I exported the texture and then imported it again the material rendered fine as it should.

This looks like a candidate for a SketchUp plugin.

Meh... I just tried this with another texture, and then it was fine instantly.

                  So ignore my last post.
Try "Make Unique Texture" on your model.

                    Davide,

Can you attach an example skp? I often use projected textures with VfSU, but just by importing and exploding an image, not via SU's photomatch function. Does copying the projected textured geometry into another skp file fix it? Or have you tried right-clicking each projected textured face, and in the context menu select Texture>Position and then (without actually modifying the position) hit Enter to fix the UV mapping. I sometimes have to do this to overcome an annoying SU bug when textures within groups don't remember their UV mapping correctly.

Jackson, the problem isn't the Photomatch itself. What photomatch does is map the texture skewed and distorted. V-Ray doesn't recognise this. You can take any texture, Right-Click->Position and then taper it. V-Ray won't handle that. You can only rotate the scale.

                        Re: sketchup project texture

Ahh... ok. I've managed to find a workaround for this, but it is really scrappy. Export the geometry with the projected textures on it in 3ds format, then import this back into SU. It'll render fine now. The only obvious differences are that all faces will now be triangulated and each face will have it's own distinct texture.

Using "Make Unique Texture" also creates a material for each face, but at least you don't have to go through Max and get the triangulation.

                            LOL

What's weird about this is that it is to do with photomatch and perspective distortion, but not projected textures or skew per se. I just did a test with an imported image, exploded and projected onto a box (at 45° in horizontal and vertical axes which would mean that the textures on 3 faces are stretched lengthwise and skewed) and it rendered fine in VfSU.... and without SU creating 3 separate materials for each face. Very weird.

But where the projected textures tapered? Stretching works fine. Only tapering, or if you use Free Pins to warp the texture fails.
