  • Caustics won't work with Skylight

I'm a common user of the V-Ray GI Skylight environment to get the day light effect on my scenes, yet, I'm finding trouble to make the caustics effects to show up on the scenes, even the material having refraction and transparency. I'm using V-Ray 1.05.30. Why is this happening?

What caustic effects, specifically, are you referring too? Refraction alone is not enough to enable caustic calculations, so in order to see caustics (or things that look like caustics) you'll have to do something more. I'll explain the details, but I'd like to know a bit of what you're looking for before I get into specifics that may or may not be relevant.

I think he means this: http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?to...33429#msg33429

      Btw that thread remains unanswered.

Re: Caustics won't work with Skylight

I was referring to whether he was expecting something like GI caustics, or caustics from the sunlight, or light through a refractive window. Each one of those deal with caustics in a different way and have a different answer.

I know you would like that thread answered, but honestly, there's nothing special about what I did there. I just placed an omni light so that it kind of matched my sun angle, turned its intensity fairly low so it didn't affect the illumination of the scene and the caustic multiplier fairly high to counter act the low intensity of the light. I think everything else is pretty much default setups. I've lost that scene, so I really can't go back and look to see exactly what the settings are.

Dalomar, it's about water and other objects caustics, like a ring of glass, for a example. I'm trying a water caustics with GI turned on, and made the same procedure that you described (making the omni light, low intensity, high caustics subdivisions at the omni configs (something like 10000), approximately match angle of sun light when positioning the omni), yet, this is the result that I'm getting:

I would like to know if I'm messing at the configuration of the omni, or is something else..

make your caustics multiplier higher, and set your light's cutoff to 0.0001.

If it doesn't helps, download this skp. file from this topic http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?to...35972#msg35972
and go through the options, material and light settings.

Re: Caustics won't work with Skylight

unfortunatelly, the scene above uses an OMNI LIGHT to produce the caustics... (in fact, the scene was deleted from the server).

but what pisses me of is that on page 4, they WERE ABLE TO ACHIEVE water caustics using ONLY the Skylight... but noone wrote the settings, and the scene was ALSO deleted from the host server

Re: Caustics won't work with Skylight

Well from what I know in other modeling apps you see your "sun" with a focus points. That radial thing will fire the photons needed for caustics. I don't know how this works with vrayfSU? When I use modo I need to fire like 1.000.000 photons or even 10.000.000 photons to get caustics to work. I made it work with GI on in vrayfSU once with very shallow water but I can't remember the settings.... I stopped trying

ah, exactly... it was you who got it on the other thread! So... you forgot the settings uh?

Thanks, guys, after talking to a friend, I managed to make caustics works, here's my result:
