This has happened to me just a couple of times in as many years, but I finally found what causes it and it is reproducable in any skp file.
The symptom is that all custom visopt info and vismats are suddenly lost during an SU/VfSU session meaning you have to set the whole thing up again from scratch or, if you realised it happened quickly enough, close that skp file WITHOUT SAVING and reopen the last saved version (yet another reason for regular saves).
The cause (or at least the only one I've identified) is if you select "New file" in SU (either by icon or from the "File" menu) a prompt will appear asking if you want to save changes before closing and opening a blank file. That in itself is completely harmless, but if you change your mind at this point and select "Cancel" SU flickers for a few seconds and all your V-Ray skp file info is lost. As I said, AFAIK the only fix for this is to immediately close that file and open the last saved version.
