  • Broken Geometry......Help!!!!

    Hey guys. So I have successfully used VRAY several times without problems, but for some reason, when doing a render test just to see the model in its current state, I am having issues with broken geometry. Has anyone experienced this before? I am curious if it's a render setting that I am not aware of. Nothin special about the settings, just default materials and IR as primary and LC as secondary. Please check out this pic and let me know if anyone can help.....

    Are you sure all normals are facing the right way?

    Also, the two triangles of noise above the pillar on the right-hand facade would seem to indicate that you have co-planar faces, so maybe the model needs cleaning up in general.

      When you say that all faces are normal....do you mean "not reversed", in which case I made very sure of this. As far as co-planer surfaces go, how do I go about cleaning that up? The face of the building that shows "noise" has a subtle curve to it, where as the part with broken geometry is straight as an arrow. I was very maticulous about building this model, however maybe I am missing something? Maybe this is more of a sketchup modeling question, but I am not sure of how to go about "cleaning" the model up....

        Hmmm, that's strange, as you say the SU image looks fine. Can you delete everything apart from the dodgy geometry, purge the skp file and send it to me by PM using a file sharing site so I can take a look at it?

            The problem is caused by all the edges you've drawn on the facade faces- they've caused the SU geometry to get really screwed up in that area which isn't rendering properly. The problem is that contrary to popular belief what you see is not what you get in SU- although all your faces and edges look fine when you select some and delete them you'll see there's another coplanar faces "behind" them. Try redrawing the lines in the screwed up area, then select all the faces in that area (don't drag to select, you have to individually select each face) and hide them to check that there aren't any sneaky coplanar faces hidden behind them. If you find any, just delete them. Coplanar faces are always bad news in render engines, they cause all sorts of weird effects.

            Otherwise it's a really clean model, nice work.

            p.s. jpgs are much more suitable for posting on the net, they're a tenth of the size of pngs so they load muuuuuch faster.
