Re: vrimg is turning out black-ish

is there an option to do that!? I think it would run into the same limits as other renders (tif, png, etc) in that it doesn't save incrementally as the buckets render - which is the advantage of vrimage, especially for large renders.

OK - cool, I never saw that option. So I tried a render and it worked fine to render as EXR - but this does not seem to address the vrimage issue...
Is there an update to the vrimg2exr converter?? Maybe the vrimage format is not being read correctly with the current converter. Thanks for any help you may have on this.

How do you mean? How can I do it?

It's one of the options for saving an image in the buffer - like jpg or png. Doesn't do the same thing as vrimage. You have to render the whole image first.

but how is that going to help me?
I'm trying to render a large , high resolution picture, and v-ray would crash if I render at 6000 pixeles...

Thant's the whole idea of using VRIMG...

inbal - it should be rendering to disk, rather than the VFB, so it should still reduce RAM usage.

Re: vrimg is turning out black-ish

I don't understand: if there is a more simple way- why go all this trouble to render to vrimg and then convert to exr.

Are you saying that saving the image as exr is the same as the converted way?

Re: vrimg is turning out black-ish

Devin - are you referring to the "save file" option instead of the "render to vrimage" option in the output tab? From what I understand, the problem was that the only way inbal was able to render was to save a vrimage, any other way crashed with the 5000px output.

Re: vrimg is turning out black-ish

ANDYBOT- If you enable "Render to VRImage" in the output options, you can choose to save out an .exr image rather than a .vrimage when chosing the path for the final output.

INBAL- If you're not using anything that is specific to a .vrimage, and you're just trying to save RAM during your render, I believe that if you choose .exr rather than .vrimage you should be good to go. I haven't tested it myself, I'm just pointing out that when you choose "Render to VRImage" in the output options, you have a choice of two file formats when choosing the output file name.

I realize this doesn't fix the .vrimage conversion issue, and I'm not trying to dodge that bug, I'm just trying to help find a workaround until we can get to the bottom of this issue.

Cool, now I understand. I just assumed the only option for raw image was the .vrimg format. Thanks for pointing out the exr option for saving a raw image.

yeah, the label doesn't make sense, sorry about that.

So, having said that. Can you only render to file using either VRIMG or EXR? Or if I set the 'Save File' to say a TIFF it would save it that way. The reason is that I don't need 24bit image for what I'm doing.

this option is for the raw file only - hence the vrimage or exr format. With vrimage, you can save the rgb channel to 16bit, but this isn't working in the current release. exr is exr - it's a 32bit format.

I'm not sure if this ever got answered: What is wrong with the vrimage that is saved with vfSU 1.49.01

                              1. Is the file format corrupted, and the next beta will correct the problem?
                              -or-
                              2. does the current converter not work. If it's the converter, is there a new converter available that can unscramble the messed up vrimage files?

                              Thanks,
                              Andy

you need a new version of the converter, which I don't have. Someone else at Chaos Group will have to help you with that. Alternatively, just render to a .exr rather than a .vrimage, as I explained earlier in this post. The converter just converts it from a vrimage to a exr anyway, so rendering directly to .exr saves you a little hassle.
