  • Fog in glass stops working

I was playing around with glass materials yesterday and noticed that the fog color worked and then mysteriously stopped working. I tried everything to fix it from checking face orientation to ungrouping, to adjusting fog settings but it still rendered as clear glass when right before it was rendering as colored. I opened a new file and tried the same exact settings on a new object and it works. Seems like a bug.

More mystery - when I place a plane under the glass object, the glass renders clear, delete the plane - it renders colored... what is the issue here?

I solved my own problem! So, when you are working with smaller objects like a wine bottle, you need to set the color value for the fog to a higher value like 10-12. I was using 1.0 because it worked when the bottle was 8 feet tall, but when I scaled it down to real world dimensions, the value of 1 was rendering the glass clear.

Apparently this ball in the material preview is 30" diameter. So keep that in mind
