Did you save the GI solution using override material?

I had the same issue yesterday. I haven't figure out why, but in my case I went to the "Global Switches" and enable override material, after the render with override material, I save the GI solution (IRR MAp and LC). Then I disable the "override material" and I used the saved GI solution. My render went like your. So I save the GI solution again, but without the override material option enable and everything went well.
I'm not sure what could cause the issue, because my scene is working good now.

Does this mean we should avoid the material override completely?

No, this issue is a random issue and I got it when I use Override material in one scene, but it is went well in other scene. So I really don't know what is causing this issue. I hope we could find how resolve this issue together.
