I've been using vfs3 pretty exclusively in GPU rendering. With 2 GTX1070's it's blazing fast. Unfortunately, there is a significant difference in GPU rendering depending on if interactive is enabled or disabled. Here is a simple dome-lit scene, you can see the difference. The first render is with interactive enabled, the second is GPU progressive rendering. You can see the second rendering is calculating quite incorrectly. I tested the scene in Vray for Blender with GPU rendering just to make sure I was correct in what result I was expecting.

Your observations are correct. There was an issue with the render output results when using Light Cache in GPU mode. It has been already resolved and its fix will be part of the next update.
