  • Repeated crash in SketchUp 2018. after Vray upgrade

Hi, I upgraded to Vray 3 (and reprogrammed my dongle).
I am using Windows 8.1 and Sketchup Pro 2018.
I repeatedly get the message below and then SU crashes. It is unusable.
This problem is not happening in 2016 and Vray works fine there.

    Error Loading File C:/Program Files/Chaos Group/V-Ray/V-Ray for SketchUp/extension/ruby/init.rb
Error: #<StandardError: Failed to initialize V-Ray>

Looks like you're running into a compatibility issue with SketchUp 2018's Dynamic components plugin. The problem will be fixed in the next V-ray 3.6 sub release, until then you can try to:

    1. Uninstall V-Ray

    2. Open Sketchup and from the drop-down menu Window --> Extension manager disable Dynamic Components extension. Then create a scene and save it, it doesn`t matter what it will be, the important part is to make a save.

    3. After that close Sketchup, start it again, check in the Extension manager if Dynamic Components is still disabled and close Sketchup again.

    4. Install V-Ray and start Sketchup and try to render with V-Ray.

I tried that. Does not work. Same Load Error (below), followed by crash. Also, Dynamic Components is activated in my SketchUp 2016 and Vray 3.6 is working fine there.

I have found that with Dynamic Components disabled and the Sketchucation plugin disabled I am able to use Vray 3.06 and all my other plugins in SU 2018. This problem was not present in SU 2016.

I had bugsplats on start of SketchUp, followed the steps above, and get this:

            Error Loading File C:/Program Files/Chaos Group/V-Ray/V-Ray for SketchUp/extension/ruby/init.rb
Error: #<StandardError: Failed to initialize V-Ray>

            C:/Program Files/SketchUp/SketchUp 2018/Tools/extensions.rb:197:in `require'
            C:/Program Files/SketchUp/SketchUp 2018/Tools/extensions.rb:197:in `load'
            C:/ProgramData/SketchUp/SketchUp 2018/SketchUp/Plugins/vfs.rb:26:in `register_extension'
            C:/ProgramData/SketchUp/SketchUp 2018/SketchUp/Plugins/vfs.rb:26:in `<module:VRay>'
            C:/ProgramData/SketchUp/SketchUp 2018/SketchUp/Plugins/vfs.rb:4:in `<top (required)>'

And SketchUp still crash and fail to launch. (so, disabling Dynamic Components plugin alone did not help)

I have disabled all installed plugins and installed V-ray, and is now opening.
The ones that managed to stay disabled are as attached as jpgs.

with a bit of further investigating, it seems to be colliding with Fredo's plugins.

Sketchup Pro 2018 stopped loaded all of a sudden this morning. Everything has been running smooth...haven't made any changes. Just closed a drawing and went to open a new one and all of a sudden getting what looks like the same Load Error mentioned above. Windows 10 pro, Vray 3.6.1

Just followed the direction to disable dynamic components and sketchucation extensions and reinstalled Vray and Sketchup is now loading again. Kind of crazy that this problem happened all of a sudden after so long with no problem. Can we expect the release of 3.06.02 soon?

The plan is to release it this month. Most likely in a couple of weeks.

Sketchup again suddenly starting crashing upon opening files. Middle of the working day, no changes made to system or sketchup...no new plugins, etc. Any idea what to do here? (I'm completely racked with deadlines...)

Just an update: After disabling all extensions, Sketchup will open & Vray will load....so I am back up and rendering. But obviously, this is less than ideal to a have to load/unload all extensions and restart when switching between modeling & rendering.
