  • VRay Next for Maya toon shader coming to Sketchup?

The new toon shader in Vray Next checks all the boxes I've been hoping for in VRay Sketchup's capabilities. Will this be ported to VRay Sketchup with the next release? If so, is there a timeline for development? I'm trying to decide whether to use Blender or wait it out for Sketchup on a new project.

    Thanks!
    Pete

Could you just export a SketchUp hidden line view to get this effect from SketchUp (for now)?

unfortunately no. I need more precision and control over line weight, placement, and types than sketchup can offer. typically i make toon lines and silhouettes by exporting sketchup views to pdf and uniting shapes in illustrator as needed. this gives the best results in terms of precision, but takes a long time, and would require manual shading. (sketchup shades faces on a per polygon basis when exported to PDF, which is not ideal)

what i'm really interested in is true cel shading as can be done in blender, C4D and now VRay for Maya (and soon Max) to name a few. Sketchup's shadows are too geometry dependant and simple. I'm looking for sharp shadows with smooth edges, with gloss highlights, perhaps with some normal simplification/generalization to smooth out those potentially jagged shadow edges on low-poly models.

We are interested in improving MtlToon and/or adding some implementation of the new development for the Toon shader in Maya, however, it is not currently on top of the dev team's priority list.
Furthermore, we do not have an official release on V-Ray Next for SketchUp yet.
Wish I could tell more. Will post more info once a working solution can be demonstrated (no ETA).

        Kind regards,
        Peter

It's 2020, wonder if Toon Shader is finally available in Vray for SU?

There is currently some active development going on for the existing Toon material contour effects. Changes are scheduled be part of the next update.
Implementing the cel shading as it appears in V-Ray for Maya and not just its contours element, however, is still being evaluated as we want to ensure a more streamlined workflow that is easy to use.

Can you please share an example of what you would like to use the cel shading for or anything else that you wish to use in V-Ray for SketchUp which is currently missing from the product?

            Kind regards,
            Peter

Hi Peter, I've sent to Tsvetomira Girginov of the examples. In the meantime, I'll see if I can export my SU file to Blender and go that route.
