Where did color mapping go? Is this no longer in a thing?

Yeah man...where have you been? Welcome to Vray 3.

'Hightlight Burn' under exposure in the VFB Corrections pretty much replaced color mapping. Highlight burn of 1 equals linear; lowering highlight burn is like reinhardt settings. (It hurts my brain thinking back that far to try and remember all the old lingo...) So now you can just hit render, not worry about any color mapping, but still be able to apply & adjust it non-destructively in the VFB.

One thing they did away with that I really miss is the GI color saturation settings. I liked being able to lower this to control color bleed. Hope it shows back up in the next release. White buildings surrounded by grass get sad without that feature.

But it still exists in Max 3.6

I was just curious if there was a reason why it’s been left out of SketchUp. I assume ease of use.

I believe the reason for the difference is that Max has it's own Gamma/LUT settings while sketchup...is just sketchup. Honestly, I was always confused with the gamma settings since SU itself had no way to manage gamma...so I'm kind of glad its gone. I have trouble remembering back that far...(what has it been a year yet..?), but I feel like my life is easier now. But I also think they realize that most vfs users aren't that advanced and want more of a one button renderer, while Max users are in the VFX industry, and so on, and need more complicated options. I don't completely agree myself, or at least wish they would keep the settings and maybe just 'hide' them in the advanced panel. There is a lot that they've 'dumbed down' in vfs3 that I wish was still there. (like the GI saturation..) Oh, I just remembered, in one of the last updates they added 'highlight burn' into the render settings panel somewhere. Although, they still recommend not using it because you can adjust it non-destructively in the VFB, but if you set it in the settings panel it will be baked in and will need a re-render to change.

Some of the options (mainly viable for troubleshooting) can still be found under Settings > Raytrace (advanced view) > Optimizations.
Regarding GI Saturation - it will not be brought back. You can employ a MtlOverride to negate unwanted effect a particular material may have on GI (as shown in the video from the link above).

            Kind regards,
            Peter

That's a bummer. I hate to have to do a bunch of work-arounds when I used to be able to change a '1' to a '0.7' and be done with it. Don't worry, I'll continue to complain about it.

I'm not even to look to deal with GI Saturation. I just want to adjust the gamma of the image. I find the images coming out of the VFB to be too dark in the shadows. It could just be my monitor, but my monitor is calibrated to our office printer so I have to make it look correct on screen. I am finding on most images I have to open the EXR, and adjust the gamma up 1.15 in Photoshop Exposure in order to look correct.

                  Hey Matt,
If that is a Laubwerk tree, I would check the materials to make sure 'linear workflow' isn't checked, as this will mess up the gamma for those textures and give it that dark look. I seem to remember Laubwerk's materials coming in like that...although I haven't been using Laubwerk much lately. Might be because they haven't updated their assets to Vray 3, so their Vray 2 materials come in with linear workflow checked. Someone from Chaos Group gave me a script to disable linear workflow for all scene materials. If I can find it again I will re-post for you.

I just opened a new file and checked...just to make sure I wasn't putting false info onto the interwebs...

Here's a test, I popped a laubwerk tree into new file and hit render at default, then ran that script and re-rendered---->

I have come across a few issues with how their materials are setup. This it not good!

That snippet of code is a life saver. I have been wondering why the heck all these trees look so damn dark!

I have reported this back to Laubwerk, along with other issues with the glossiness settings, which create these blown out areas in the reflections.

I know...their packages aren't cheap, right?!...hoping they can keep up the maintenance on them. I've bought at least 3 since well after Vray 3 was out... You know what, I just remembered posting on here about their reflections a while back...I'll see if I can find it.

Here it is......let me know if this matches up with your findings------> https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...irefly-problem

Turning off Linear Workflow doesnt seem to be the right solution. If you look at how the bitmap for the leaf is setup, it has a custom curve set, correcting the issue. If you turn off Linear Workflow alone, the leaf texture gets the incorrect gamma applied to it.

The reflection issue seems to be related to the reflection slider being turned to off and having highlight glossiness turned too low.
