  • Displacement unpredictable / not working in VRAY Next

I have been carrying out tests in VRay next using displacement. AS you can see it only works on simple forms and ins the same scene doesn't work on others. This used to work in previous version but really struggling in Next.

All images are in the same model
Texture is from poliigon using the same maps
All forms are groups and have materials applied to both sides.

    Hi,

Could you please share the file with us so we can investigate in detail? If this is alright, please send us an archived copy (Extensions > V-Ray > Pack Project) via email or file-sharing service of your choice to support@chaosgroup.com

Please be informed that the issue occurs because of the way the material is applied.

For displacement to work, the material needs to be applied to the whole object (group/component), whereas if it is applied to a specific face inside the group, no displacement will be produced.

Just a quick question - when I apply texture to the group or component, how do I control the UV mapping?

You can actually apply the displaced material to both the faces and the group.
The face material will be used for the mapping.
The group material will make sure the displacement is generated (applied to the object).

We are currently looking into ways to improve the Displacement workflow.
One of the better options from our standpoint is to apply the displacement to objects directly (not via the material).
What do you think about this option?
