  • Diffuse texture alpha confusion

As a garden designer, I make extensive use of cut-out plant images as face-me components in my models. Some are from purchased libraries, some I cut out myself in Photoshop CC. These I always save in PNG format and import them into SU with the same workflow (import as image, scale & orientate correctly, explode, make component with face me properties).

What I experience when I render is very inconsistent handling of the images in VRAY - or if there is a reason for the different behaviour, I cannot figure it out! I get four possible outcomes:

    1. The face me component renders perfectly with the transparency as expected.
    2. The image appears with transparent areas showing white (I have to then select the material in Vray and enable 'Diffuse texture alpha'), then it works as above.
    3. The image appears with transparent areas showing black (I have to then select the material in Vray and enable 'Diffuse texture alpha'), then it works as above.
    4. The image appears with transparent areas showing some image artifacts (I have to then select the material in Vray and enable 'Diffuse texture alpha'), then it works as above.

I have no idea what is causing these different outcomes. Can anyone tell me so that ideally I can make the component in such a way that VRAY handles it correctly first time round, without having to edit all the component materials. I have just had to do this for about 30 materials in one model. (I don't suppose there is any way to automate this either?)

Hello, and apologies for the late response!
The way an alpha appears (white/black/glitched) depends on the software used to create the PNG file in the first place.
To make sure V-Ray always reads the PNG alpha channel as opacity, enable the Material Opacity's Custom Source parameter and set it to "Diffuse Texture Alpha".

You can find out more about the Opacity parameters at https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...eneric-Opacity
If you require any further assistance, please send an email at support@chaosgroup.com with a sample project file or illustrations and specify your version of V-Ray for SketchUp.

    Kind regards,
