  • Remove Materials takes forever

Especially on complex models, even if it is just one object and not a group of objects (i´m avoiding this anyway), the "Remove Materials" function takes forever.

Is there any way how to speed things up on that?

Hello, and thank you for your post!
There have been no previous reports on this matter.
The speed of execution of the "Remove Materials" function depends on the number of faces of the selected object(s).
Could you please provide some additional info that can help us determine what is the cause of this slowdown?
    1. Versions of your OS, SketchUp and V-Ray
    2. Confirmation whether the issue is reproducible after disabling all 3rd-party extensions beside V-Ray
    3. Confirmation whether it is bound to a specific project file.
    4. Does the slowdown you experience occur only when working with very complex objects (high face count)?
    5. Does it occur only when removing specific materials?
Will be able to provide you with further assistance once we know a bit more about the circumstances around your problem.

    Kind regards,
    Peter

      Hi Peter

      I´m using Windows 10 with the latest Updates, Sketchup Pro 2019 V19.2.222 64-bit and V-Ray Next 4.00.02
Also my graphic card drivers are always up to date.

      My machine works with an AMD Ryzen 1920x / 32GB DDR4 / GeForce GTX1070Ti

No Antivirus tool is running except the Win 10 internal one.

The problem also appears, if i´m disabling all 3rd party extensions and it´s in my case not bound to a specific project.

I was recognizing this already since the function is available but as i´m working now with more models which have a high poly count,
i try to prevent the remove materials tool because it takes that long.

It´s way faster, to delete the material from my material manager and add it afterwards again to get rid of the material on the model.

I´m always applying the materials on the lowest object level, never on groups, except i´m working with displacement maps
and this is also the level where i´m using the remove material tool as well.

During the process, Sketchup does not respond to anything.

On simple objects, the speed is ok but i was just stopping the time on an object to give you a reference:

      Object: Shaderball | 15975 faces

Material: Standard Sketchup Color M09 (Black) applied to

Removal Time: 9 min 47 sec.

      Kind Regards - Walter

        Hello, Walter,

Thank you for your detailed response!
The behavior you've described is definitely not in line with our own tests. We've passed your case to one of our developers for further advice and will get back to you soon!

        Kind regards,
        Peter

The bug was identified and a solution will be available in the upcoming v4.1 update.
Please let us know if there is anything else you find not working as expected.

Peter.Chaushev Hi Peter! It seems that in the new Versions of V-Ray (i´m using V-Ray 5.10.04 on Sketchup Pro 2021.1 on a Win10 OS) there have been no significants improvements on this topic.
Material removement still takes such a long time on complex geometry.

                Hello, LionHeart1985 ,
Retested material removal / material deletion using the same setup you reported. Found no regression in the solution that was included with V-Ray 4.1. Overall speed is still ~15-50 times greater in comparison with v4.0.
Could you please share a scene that exhibits a slowdown when removing materials from numerous faces?
You can upload it using our support form https://www.chaosgroup.com/help/cont.../scene#options or a file-sharing service of your choice. Be sure to mention this forum thread in your message.

                Kind regards,
